Castellnovo: Heritage and Outdoor Activities
Accommodation in Castellnovo
For a trip to Castellnovo, culture and outdoor activities can be considered as two main themes. Notable historic buildings include the Castillo de Beatriz de Borgia, the Cisterna Árabe and the Iglesia de los Santos Reyes. The Cerro de San Cristóbal adds another hermitage and a viewpoint; cycling and the route to the Poza de los Gitanos offer other ways to explore the area. If you are looking for a hotel in Castellnovo, it helps to first consider which of these interests will shape your trip.
Castle History and Water Supply
The Castillo de Beatriz de Borgia stands on the hill of San Cristóbal, very close to the town centre, and is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. The castle is believed to have Roman origins. During Muslim rule, it was rebuilt on older remains; the names Castillo Nuevo and Castellnou derive from this history. In the mid-15th century, Beatriz de Borgia had the castle transformed into a palace with Renaissance features.
Another aspect of the town’s history can be seen at the Cisterna Árabe. This Hispano-Arabic structure was essential to Castellnovo’s water supply until the 1960s. It consists of a staircase, an underground chamber and a circular basin with a capacity of approximately 200,000 litres. In the Alto Palancia comarca, the cistern is one of the best-preserved examples of this type of Islamic water engineering. Its components and its large, explicitly approximate capacity give the site a different character from the castle: here, the focus is on the historic water supply.
Churches and Architecture
The Iglesia de los Santos Reyes is a Renaissance church with a Latin-cross floor plan. Its architectural features include Corinthian and Doric columns, a chapel and two adjoining domes. The church preserves 17th-century wall paintings, particularly in the chapel. The first phase of construction was completed on 24 September 1662. A visit to this building therefore brings together architectural features, preserved paintings and a precisely dated construction phase.
Elevation, Views and Activities
The Ermita de San Cristóbal stands on the 571-metre summit of the Cerro de San Cristóbal. It dates from the 15th century and was fully restored in 1977. From the square by the hermitage, views stretch across the Río Palancia basin towards the Mediterranean; the Sierra Calderona Natural Park lies in the background. The Ermita de San Antonio de Padua was built in 1724 at the start of the ascent to the Cerro. Its atrium provides shelter for worshippers and visitors.
For cycling travellers, the moderate R18 route, which is 57 kilometres long, is a specific option. It passes through the forests of the Sierra de Espadán, alongside the Pantano del Regajo and the Río Palancia; the first five kilometres start from Castellnovo. Its difficulty rating and length provide two clear details for planning. Check current route conditions before setting out.
From the area around the Fuente de la Mina, a path leads through the Sierra de San Roque to the Río Chico and the Poza de los Gitanos, which is suitable for swimming. Water and access conditions can change, so check them before swimming.
Festivals and Local Cuisine
The Santa Cruz celebrations include a traditional chocolatada. The Fiesta de la Mina takes place in July and includes the distribution of filled rolls and a dance event. Las Mozas honours the Virgen del Rosario; the celebrations include decorated streets and a costume parade. The exact dates of the festivals may vary, so coordinate your travel plans with the specific event dates.
Local cuisine also features several named specialities: Olla de col is considered a typical Castellnovo dish. Other recommended local specialities include Olla de pencas, Cocas and artisan cheeses. Together with the festivals and historic buildings, these dishes offer further ways to shape your stay around particular interests.
