In Cervera Del Maestre, a common thread runs from the fortress through the fully restored old town to historic buildings such as the olive mill. There are also trails of varying lengths and suitable for different modes of transport. You can choose whether to focus your stay on architectural history, the townscape or the surrounding landscape.

Castle, Alleys and Historic Buildings

Castillo Fortaleza is a 12th-century Islamic fortress and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It was built on an older caliphal hisn. The old town also tells the story of the settlement’s development: its labyrinthine, Andalusian-influenced street layout consists of steep, irregular alleys around the castle and church.

On Calle Mayor, you’ll find protected coats of arms, historical inscriptions on windows and houses with ground-floor arcades. The former Jewish quarter was located in Forn del Gall square. The Church of the Assumption is Baroque and has a rectangular floor plan with side chapels and altars. The bell tower of Cervera Del Maestre dates from 1760; the Baroque structure has a hexagonal floor plan. Inside, a stone spiral staircase with 105 steps connects the tower’s three levels.

Another glimpse into history awaits at the Antigua lonja medieval. The hall was built in the 14th century by the Order of Montesa for the wool trade. Its large hall is divided into three naves; the building has been restored. The Centro de Interpretación Molí de l’Oli is a protected olive mill dating from the 14th to 15th centuries. Today, the building serves as a visitor centre and as premises for the municipal administration or tourist information. A wooden beam-and-weight press dating from 1606 has been preserved there; the traditional process of making olive oil is also explained.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The routes vary considerably in length and character. Ruta senderista 1, el Colomer, is two kilometres long and rated very easy. It runs along Monte Colomer near Cervera and leads to a viewpoint overlooking the municipality. Ruta senderista 2, la Rourera, is 8.5 kilometres long, follows narrow paved paths and passes the Aljibe de la Llacuna cistern.

The 14-kilometre Ruta interpretativa 2, la Piedra en Seco, passes significant dry-stone structures. It can be completed on foot, by bicycle or by car. Conditions on this route may vary seasonally; check local trail conditions before setting out. A paved walking path leads to the Área de la Cova Fonda and may begin near the municipal swimming pools. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the meanders and fertile alluvial plains of the Rambla de Cervera, as well as the coastline visible beyond. As access conditions may change, it is advisable to check before visiting.

Climbing and bouldering are also among the activities described in the area around the Rambla de Cervera. There are five sectors with a total of 120 boulder problems, as well as 10 to 15 bolted climbing routes. For up-to-date information about the sectors, it is advisable to check locally.

Culture, Events and Pilgrimage Routes

Casa del Drac regularly hosts art exhibitions and public cultural events, including concerts, poetry readings and live painting. Check the current programme before visiting. Recurring traditions include the Easter processions on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, accompanied by brotherhoods, music bands and religious images. The La Mare de Déu de la Costa patronal festival includes talks, exhibitions, an open-air dance, a solemn high mass and a procession in September; the organisers may change the exact dates.

On the last Sunday in May, a pilgrimage leads from Cervera Del Maestre to the Royal Sanctuary of the Virgin of la Font de la Salut in Traiguera. The Ruta del Camino de Santiago is a separate route: it runs from Vinaròs via Càlig, Cervera, Sant Mateu and Xert or the hamlet of Anroig to the Santuario de Vallivana. Pilgrim passports can be stamped at the participating town halls. If you plan to follow this route, check the current arrangements for stamps and accommodation in advance. Local traditions are also at the heart of the Fira de Nadal: the Christmas market takes place on the second weekend in December and showcases wines, turrón, bread and pastries, cured meats and honey. Confirm the dates of the relevant edition before your trip.
