Cortes De Arenoso offers a range of options to consider when planning a trip: mountain scenery, routes for outdoor activities, historic buildings and local history. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first decide whether nature and culture are the main draw, or whether an appointment in one of the two settlement centres is important.

Mountain Scenery and Trails

Cabezo de las Cruces reaches 1,710 metres and is described as the second-highest mountain in the province of Castellón. A single tree is also a notable natural landmark: El Rebollo, also known as El Abuelo, is a Quercus faginea over 700 years old and is considered the oldest in Spain. In addition, Cortes De Arenoso has one of the most significant formations of pines and Pyrenean oaks in the Comunitat Valenciana. These are distinct natural highlights: the named mountain, the distinctive tree formation and an exceptionally old tree.

The many paths and trails in Cortes De Arenoso are suitable for hiking, running and cycling. The GR 7 E32 offers a specific route to follow. It starts in San Vicente de Piedrahita, which belongs to Cortes De Arenoso; its other waypoints include El Cerrito, La Artejuela and Montanejos. When planning a trip, it is useful to distinguish these named waypoints from the paths and trails described more generally: the waypoints relate to the GR 7 E32, while the other routes are mentioned as options for several activities.

Local Character and History

The history of Cortes De Arenoso goes back to Iberian, Roman and Arab times. The town belonged to the Baronía de Arenós. San Vicente de Piedrahita also has its own historical context: the village was founded by the Arabs. Its name is connected with San Vicente Ferrer, who preached in the area.

Several buildings and ensembles stand out in the historic townscape. The Portal Calle Herrerías is the main gate of the former medieval settlement, which was surrounded by a defensive wall. The Rincón del Portal is a former entrance to the town, with a covered wooden portal. “Caseríos del cerrito” is designated as a historic centre and architectural ensemble of particular interest; the buildings are predominantly made of dry stone. The Church of Our Lady of the Angels was completed in 1585.

The Museo Etnológico del Pan is housed in a restored former communal Moorish oven. The exhibits include tools used to grow wheat and make bread. The museum thus brings together two stages of breadmaking: growing the grain and processing it. The large archaeological area of Cortes De Arenoso offers another glimpse into the past, showing continuous settlement over two millennia. Excavations focused mainly on the settlement of Los Morrones.
