Accommodation in Todolella
Todolella brings together architecture shaped by the medieval period, lively festival traditions and distinctive natural sites. When planning a stay, you can focus on architectural history, events or the landscape—and time your trip to coincide with the town’s seasonal experiences.
Architecture and historic townscape
The Burgrave’s Palace is a 16th-century building with Gothic features. Its four sections are grouped around a central courtyard; the palace is privately owned. The parish church of San Bartolomé Apóstol offers a different architectural impression. Dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, it has a Greek-cross floor plan with a central dome. The church interior contains paintings and a 15th-century altarpiece. Todolella’s winding streets have a distinctly medieval layout and add to the historic townscape.
The two buildings make different architectural statements: at the palace, the sections arranged around the courtyard catch the eye, while at the church, the cross-shaped floor plan and dome define its architecture. Together with the streets, they convey the variety of the town’s historic buildings.
Festivals, dance and traditional crafts
Todolella’s cultural traditions include Les Danses Guerreres, a dance of Iberian origin. Eight men perform it in traditional costume. Its thirteen steps imitate a fight with sticks and swords. The dance takes place on the Sunday of the patron saint’s festivals in honour of Saint Bartholomew; these celebrations are held each year during the week of August 24.
The August festivities in honour of San Bartolomé and San Redento also include Les Gitanetes, in which women in traditional costume perform a choreography with colourful ribbons. Another seasonal tradition is the Santantonà , held around mid-February. The life of the saint is portrayed, after which he is carried through the streets in a procession that ends at a bonfire. The exact festival dates may vary from year to year.
Crafts are also part of local life. Hemp is worked in the streets to make espadrilles, traditionally known as “espardenyes”. This work can often be seen except on Sundays and public holidays. If you are interested in local produce, you could also consider a guided tour at Jamones Alfredo Monfort. The tour takes you through the facilities, offers an insight into the curing process and ageing cellars, and ends with a tasting of the company’s own products. Confirm the tour arrangements with the company before your trip.
Landscape, viewpoints and paths
La Mola de Todolella is the small mountain on which the castle stands. From the summit, there are far-reaching views over the surrounding area. At Forat del Lladre, you can look out over a densely vegetated ravine with striking bands of rock. In spring, the Font del CamarĂł emerges as a small waterfall, dropping vertically between the rocks; its flow may vary.
A walk from Todolella across the Gothic bridge leads to the abandoned settlement of Sarañana, also known as Saranyana, about four kilometres away. Remains of a chapel with Romanesque features survive there. From there, you can continue to the 15th-century hermitage of San Cristófol, also known for its views. The Gothic bridge itself is one kilometre from the town on the CV-120, dates from 1397 and is freely accessible to visitors.
For another perspective on the night sky, there is an astronomical observation point in the Santa Bárbara area. To use it, you must contact the town council. This means you can take different interests into account when planning your trip: historic buildings and festival traditions, along with landscapes, a walk to Sarañana and the chance to observe the sky.
Choose when to visit based on your interests
The events calendar and the seasons offer different reasons to visit: the Santantonà is celebrated around mid-February, while the patron saint’s festivals fall during the week of August 24. The Font del Camaró waterfall appears in spring, and hemp processing can often be seen in the streets except on Sundays and public holidays. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Todolella, these differences may help you choose when to travel. If visiting for a festival, check the specific event dates; confirm arrangements in advance for a tour at Jamones Alfredo Monfort.
