Discover Salsadella: Culture, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Salsadella
Visitors considering Salsadella as a destination can explore its cultural history and landscape as two distinct highlights. The town’s history includes Plaza México, with its connection to the Indianos, a Baroque parish church and gates from the medieval fortifications. For the landscape, there is a 16 km route featuring ancient olive trees. The Oficina de Turismo La Salzadella also provides recommendations for things to do and getting around the area.
Plaza México and the Indianos
Plaza México is an exceptional example of Indianos architecture. Its features include a decorative fountain and lush tropical vegetation. The permanent exhibition Espai Mèxic builds on this theme: it explores Plaza México and the Indianos of La Salzadella. It is housed in Casa Abadia, Plaza Mayor 3. This extends the connection to the plaza by exploring the subject of the Indianos. It is advisable to check visiting arrangements in advance.
Parish Church and Medieval Gates
The parish church of La Salzadella was built between 1736 and 1756 by master builder Joseph Palau in the Baroque style of the northern Valencian region. The church preserves liturgical goldsmiths’ work from the 15th to the 18th century, including a processional cross made of rock crystal. Here, 18th-century architecture and older liturgical works come together in one place.
The Portal de la Bassa is one of the gates in the medieval town wall that protected access to the old road to Sant Mateu. The portal has a semicircular arch made of ashlar stone. A surviving section of the medieval wall that includes the portal is designated an Asset of Cultural Interest. The Portal de les Coves is a historic gate to the medieval fortified complex and leads to streets in the old medieval town centre. The two gates therefore represent different connections to the town’s history: one to the town wall and the old road, the other to the fortified complex and the streets of the town centre.
El Calvario and the Landscape Route
El Calvario de La Salzadella is an architectural complex comprising a chapel, a Way of the Cross with 14 stations, and a tree-lined garden with ornamental plants. Together, the chapel, Way of the Cross and garden form a clearly defined ensemble, combining religious architecture with a planted outdoor space.
As a different highlight, the 16 km Ruta de la Vía Augusta y El Mas de la Teuleria crosses the municipality of La Salzadella. It can be travelled on foot or by quad bike. Along the way, the route passes clusters of monumental olive trees as well as another cluster of thousand-year-old olive trees. Its final section towards La Salzadella follows the route of the Via Augusta. The two themes therefore differ in scale: El Calvario is an architectural complex, while the route is a trail that takes in several landscape features.
Cherry Tradition and Visitor Information
The Fira de la Cirera, Art i Tradició began in 2008 with the aim of promoting the cherries of La Salzadella. This local cherry tradition adds a connection to regional produce to the history of buildings and medieval routes.
The Oficina de Turismo La Salzadella provides recommendations for things to do, restaurants and getting around the area. Its services include information on outdoor activities and gastronomic events. This guidance complements the cultural and landscape highlights with practical advice for planning a trip.
