If you’re looking for a hotel in Soneja, it’s worth exploring the features that define the town: historic buildings, waterways and the La Dehesa natural area. You can explore the old town on foot; routes and landscapes offer further inspiration for planning your trip.

Buildings and Local History

Plaza del Mesón brings together church architecture, 18th-century townhouses and the modernist façade of a former theatre and cinema. The parish church of San Miguel Arcángel also dates from the 18th century; its furnishings include a particularly old set of bells. The chapel of San Francisco Javier was consecrated in 1692 and still has its original bell, cast in 1691.

The chapel of Cristo de la Providencia, also known as Cristo del Calvario, tells another chapter in the town’s architectural history. The 17th-century building was converted into a fortress in 1840. The Antiguo palacio de los duques de Montellano manor house has Gothic origins and was probably built in the 14th or 15th century. Remains of the Muralla carlista include a rammed-earth wall built in 1840 during the First Carlist War; it is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). The Horno de la Moratilla, meanwhile, is a historic lime kiln that was used until the industrialisation of limestone production.

Waterways and Waterworks

The El Arco aqueduct dates from the 14th or 15th century. It carried water to local mills, washhouses and gardens. The Fuente de San Juan is also part of Soneja’s water history: it was inaugurated in 1891 and was the town’s first public drinking-water fountain with running water. It still receives water from the Minguet spring; the flow may vary. The historic Fuente de San Antón is in the town centre and is associated with the vernacular architecture of the Alto Palancia comarca.

The Ruta del Agua is a sightseeing route focused on water as a natural resource, and also evokes historic water architecture and infrastructure. The Ruta Cultural has a different focus: Soneja’s historical and cultural heritage. The old town’s street layout reflects its Arab origins and can be explored on foot.

La Dehesa and Outdoor Routes

The protected municipal natural area of La Dehesa lies on the eastern edge of the municipality and covers 681.398 hectares. A temporary lagoon lies in the mountainous area and is considered unique in the Valencian region. Part of La Dehesa is designated a flora micro-reserve because of its rare, endemic or endangered plant species. It is also home to animal species listed in the catalogue of protected and specially interesting species. If you want to observe particular animals, it’s best to check locally for the current presence of individual species.

The La Dehesa visitor centre has four rooms with information panels on Soneja’s geography, history, ecology, nature, landscape, culture and heritage. A short walking trail runs beside the centre. Check the current visitor rules before your visit. The Ojos Negros Greenway runs along the edge of the town of Soneja; the Ruta Verde is an environmentally themed route featuring natural attractions. The routes therefore have different focuses. Another walk follows the banks of the Palancia, lined with tall poplar trees and scented by orange trees and other fruit trees in the Huerta.

Festive Traditions and Trip Planning

The Fiesta de San Antón takes place every year on the weekend closest to 17 January and includes the blessing of animals. The tradition also involves residents of Calle Larga offering participants a homemade pastry. During the fire tradition, sardines and meat are grilled over a bonfire. If you’re planning to visit Soneja for the fiesta, check the exact dates and current programme in advance.

For directions, take the A-7 towards Barcelona, then the A-23 towards Teruel to the Soneja/Sot de Ferrer exit. Check the latest road layout and signage before setting off. When choosing a hotel, you can first decide whether your trip will focus on the buildings in the town centre, its water history or the natural surroundings of La Dehesa.
