Torreblanca: Cycling Routes, Nature Park and Beaches
Accommodation in Torreblanca
Torreblanca offers several options to consider when planning your trip: signposted cycling routes, the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Nature Park, beaches and historic religious buildings. If you choose a destination based on its activities and character, here you’ll find cycling routes of different lengths and layouts, alongside an important wetland and a protected heritage complex. The differences between the routes and beach areas can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Cycling routes: a circular route or a route to Gola del Trenc
The 21.75-kilometre circular route “Rincones de Torreblanca” connects the town centres of Torreblanca and Torrenostra with the nature park. It runs mostly along paved paths and presents no particular physical or technical difficulties. The linear route “A La Gola del Trenc” starts at Torreblanca railway station, follows the edge of the Prat Nature Park and continues through the park to Gola del Trenc. There, an observation point offers a good view of the wetland.
At 3.84 kilometres, the route to Gola is considerably shorter than the circular route. Around half of it runs along paved paths; it, too, presents no particular physical or technical difficulties. The length, route type and surface give you clear points of comparison: you can choose between a longer loop and a shorter linear route without treating the two rides as if they were the same format.
“Torreblanca en Bici” includes more than 50 kilometres of signposted routes that can be ridden individually, with family or in a group. The circular route “Iniciación a la Montaña” starts in the town centre of Torreblanca and is suitable for all users. Alongside the two routes to Gola and between the town centres, the cycling offer therefore includes further signposted options.
Wetland and beaches
The Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Nature Park is the most important wetland in the province of Castellón and is also one of the least altered wetlands in the Valencian Community. It is also included on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. If the landscape’s character matters when choosing a destination, you’ll find an area whose wetland status is recognised at both regional and international level.
The beaches have different features. Playa Torrenostra is a wide urban beach. Two long breakwaters calm the water, making the beach suitable for swimming. Playa Norte is a long sand-and-pebble beach. Its seabed slopes gently and consists of fine sand without uneven areas. Playa Sur is a protected natural beach in the centre of the nature park. These descriptions highlight different features of each beach: the breakwaters and suitability for swimming at Playa Torrenostra, the shore and seabed conditions at Playa Norte, and Playa Sur’s character as a natural beach.
Religious buildings and heritage
The Iglesia de San Francisco in Torreblanca dates from the 15th century, served a defensive purpose and belongs to the Morellan Gothic style. Its historic function and art-historical classification give the building a dimension distinct from the town’s nature and beach attractions.
The Ermita del Calvario is a protected heritage complex in Torreblanca. It includes the original fortress church of San Francisco, the Capilla del SantĂsimo Cristo del Calvario and an ascending zigzag path. The Way of the Cross stations, made of dressed stone, are arranged along gently ascending, cypress-lined zigzag paths. Some bear dedications and dates from 1739 to 1741. This allows you to appreciate the Way of the Cross both through its layout in the landscape and through its surviving inscriptions and dates.
The Iglesia Parroquial de San BartolomĂ© also offers specific architectural and artistic details: it has three naves, four bays and side chapels. The dome over the crossing is covered with blue glazed tiles, and direct light enters through eight windows. Inside are, among other works, the “Salvador” by Josep Ferrer, scenes from the life of Saint Bartholomew by JoaquĂn Oliet, and a 17th-century painting by JosĂ© Orient. It depicts the Barbary pirate raid of 1397. Together, Torreblanca’s religious buildings reveal different aspects of the town’s history, architecture and artistic decoration.
