Vilanova D`Alcolea: Roman History and Heritage
Accommodation in Vilanova D`Alcolea
Vilanova D`Alcolea offers several starting points for a trip where historic sites and nature go hand in hand. Its history includes a Roman posting station, a section of the VĂa Augusta and buildings dating back several centuries. Those who prefer to focus on the landscape and trails will find, among other things, a hiking trail along the RĂo Vilanova and a nature reserve with distinctive amphibian species.
Roman traces and historic routes
The L’Hostalot-Ildum archaeological site is considered one of the official Roman posting stations in the imperial communications system. It is located on the CV-10, at the junction where the CV-145 begins as the access road to Vilanova D`Alcolea. This places the site within the road network; check road conditions before setting out.
The VĂa Augusta is also part of the municipality’s Roman history: the section that runs through Vilanova D`Alcolea linked Gades, present-day Cádiz, with Rome. A milestone from the Hostalot area is on public display in the lower section of the town hall. Check whether that area is accessible before visiting.
Churches, chapels and rural architecture
The Church of Sant Bertomeu was built in the 17th century on the site of the former castle. A 16th-century chalice is preserved in the church. The building’s date and location give it different historical associations: it was built on the site of a former castle, while the chalice comes from an earlier period.
The Calvario adds another dimension to the area’s architectural history. The complex comprises 14 chapels and was built between the 17th and 18th centuries at the initiative of the Franciscans. The number of chapels and the long construction period set this complex apart from Sant Bertomeu, whose location is tied to the former castle.
Vilanova D`Alcolea’s rural architecture also includes dry-stone structures. These include livestock shelters, huts, wells and small rural houses. The examples show the different uses of this building technique, from shelters to wells. The municipality also has many items made from llata, a woven material made from dwarf palm. Baskets, carrying baskets, fans and rugs are among the objects mentioned.
Llata workshops for children and older people are held regularly. The program may vary. If a workshop is important to your travel plans, check the relevant dates.
Hiking trail and nature spots
The Ruta de les Senies is an easy, 3.79-kilometre hiking trail. It runs along the banks of the RĂo Vilanova and passes hydraulic structures. Its length, difficulty rating and trail character provide useful details for planning; conditions on the trail can change and should be checked locally.
The Paratge Natural de l’Assut has been a wildlife reserve since 2015 and is home to amphibian species that are unique in Europe. This makes nature an attraction here alongside the historic buildings and trails. The Paratge Font de Calaf has a natural spring, barbecue facilities and stone tables beneath black poplars. The Xop de l’Assut is designated as a monumental tree.
You can therefore choose different focuses for your trip: Roman heritage and architectural history, llata crafts and workshops, or hiking trails and nature spots. If your stay is focused on a particular site or activity, it is worth checking its visiting conditions or program in advance.
