Alaquas offers various ways to explore its culture: the Castell d'Alaquàs and the Iglesia de la Asunción, water-related heritage and local festival traditions. If you are looking for a hotel in Alaquas, these themes can help you choose the focus of your stay—from architecture and cultural routes to traditional festivals.

Castell d'Alaquàs and its architecture

The Castell d'Alaquàs was declared a historic-artistic monument on 21 April 1918 and a Cultural Heritage Site of Special Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) on 1 December 1999. Its architecture is characterised by a square floor plan with a central courtyard and four corner towers with battlements. Unlike the Iglesia de la Asunción, the Castell is defined by the overall layout of its courtyard and towers.

Since 2003, the Castell has been used as a cultural and educational venue, hosting activities such as exhibitions and conferences. A guided tour lasts 1.5 to 2 hours and includes admission to the Castell. If you plan to include this tour in your stay, check its availability before travelling. The duration gives you a specific point of reference for planning your day.

Iglesia de la Asunción: sacred architecture and a historical connection

The Iglesia de la Asunción stands on Plaza de la Iglesia. This sacred building dates from the 16th century and is classified as a Locally Significant Heritage Site (Bien de Relevancia Local). Designed in the Churrigueresque style, the church has a single-nave layout without a dome and two entrance doors. These features offer a different architectural perspective from the Castell’s square floor plan and corner towers.

An outer and an inner arch connect the church with the Castell. Historically, this allowed the lords of the Castell to attend Mass without having to go outside. This architectural connection brings together design and earlier use: the arches served a specific purpose for the lords of the Castell.

Cultural routes through Alaquàs

Las Acequias de Alaquàs is a cultural route along the Sequieta, Terç, Roller and Dijous irrigation channels. It presents water-related heritage and its relationship to people’s daily lives. Water is therefore just as much a part of Alaquàs’ cultural identity as its buildings and their history.

The Ruta Los Nombres Antiguos de Nuestras Calles offers a different perspective. This theatrically presented cultural walk is aimed at families, and its starting meeting point is at Plaza de la Constitución. The routes differ primarily in their approach: one focuses on channels and water culture, while the other explores old street names through theatrical storytelling.

Traditions: Cordà and Carxofa

The Cordà del Crist de la Bona Mort has a history spanning more than 150 years and is a festival of provincial tourist interest. During the Cordà, fireworks are set off over a short period in an enclosed area. The Associació Amics de la Cordà d'Alaquàs promotes the necessary safety measures. This tradition can therefore be understood both through its long history and its specific format.

La Carxofa has been recognised as a festival of provincial tourist interest since 2010 and as a Locally Significant Heritage Site (Bien de Relevancia Local) since 2022. The Cant de la Carxofa is a musical composition from the 17th century that has survived, among other places, in Alaquàs. Children sing it on the 8th and 9th of a month. To distinguish between the names: La Carxofa refers to the festival, while the Cant de la Carxofa is the musical composition. This helps distinguish the two different aspects of the culture.

For planning, you can organise the themes according to your interests: the Castell and church represent architecture and historical function, Las Acequias represents water-related heritage, and the festival traditions reflect Alaquàs’ cultural life. Check before travelling whether the guided tour of the Castell is available.
