If you’re looking for a hotel in Buñol, you can tailor your stay to your interests: medieval heritage, the history of La Tomatina, music or hiking trails. Dates and trail conditions are also important when planning your trip. Visitors to the La Tomatina Museum are asked to book an appointment; some routes have current or seasonal access notices.

The fortress, Castle District and history of paper

Buñol Castle is a medieval fortress dating back to the 11th or 12th century. It was remodeled in the 14th century after the Christian conquest. According to visitor information, the site is open every day of the year at any time; admission is free. Check access conditions before your visit. In the Castle District, narrow streets of Muslim origin lead to small, whitewashed squares.

The Molino de Galán adds the history of the town’s paper industry to this historical tour. The building dates from the first half of the 19th century and is considered an example of pre-industrial heritage, representing the importance of the paper industry in Buñol. The renovated Molino Galán houses a library, a conference room, exhibition rooms and sports facilities. The La Tomatina Museum is also located there. An immersive room with 270-degree projection and photo panels show how the festival has evolved. An app, along with augmented and virtual reality, gives visitors a sense of the festival.

La Tomatina, music and local cuisine

In 2002, the Secretaría General de Turismo declared La Tomatina de Buñol a Festival of International Tourist Interest. The city’s events calendar offers another glimpse into its culture: the De Par en Part Festival opens artists’ homes to visitors and includes murals, exhibitions, workshops, talks, and design and visual arts competitions. Dates and programs may vary. The Bienal de Música de Buñol takes place every two years. Its program includes classical music, jazz, soul, blues, folk, pop and rock, as well as courses and master classes.

Mojete is also part of the local character: the dish is considered typical of Buñol and is made with flour and meat or cod. It is particularly associated with the night of La Tomatina. Cultural events, festival history and cuisine therefore offer different ways to shape your trip.

Trails and nature around Buñol

For a walk with a musical theme, the Ruta de la Música explores Buñol’s musical heritage. Information panels and signs with augmented reality accompany this walking route. The Ruta de Las Fuentes runs through much of the municipality, passing most of the town’s fountains and scenic locations.

The hiking routes vary considerably in length and difficulty. The SLCV 166 Ruta del Agua is a 7.2-kilometer circular route of moderate difficulty that starts at Parque de San Luis. DANA-related impacts have been reported on this route, and Cueva Turche is currently closed. Check trail conditions before hiking. At 29.6 kilometers, with a high difficulty rating and a stated hiking time of 7 hours and 45 minutes, the PRV 190 Las Moratillas is a much longer route. It runs from Buñol through the Sierra Malacara, Pico Nevera and Barranco Carcalín to Las Moratillas; here, too, you should check conditions before setting out.

Another hiking route leads into Barranco Carcalín, via Alto Jorge and past El Dique, Corral de Cabras, fossil beaches and Puente Natural, before continuing to La Jarra and the Buñol River. It is intended for experienced hikers and follows unpaved paths over uneven terrain. The route description notes a seasonal access restriction for Barranco Carcalín from January 1 to June 30 to protect nesting birds of prey. Check conditions before hiking.

Parque de San Luis is home to the Ermita de San Luís Beltrán, remodeled in 1896, a spring and a bubbling spring outlet. Parque Fluvial is a walking path along the Buñol riverbed; its riverbank area has been restored and redesigned. The park has been affected by DANA, so check access before visiting. At Parque El Planell, visitors can try and learn orienteering on a permanent course using checkpoints, maps, posts or markers, and a compass.
