Carlet: Pilgrimage, Architecture and Festivals
Accommodation in Carlet
Carlet brings together sacred history and local customs, alongside buildings in a variety of architectural styles. A recurring point of reference is the veneration of San Bernat: it is reflected in the pilgrimage chapel, the Paraje de Pintarrafes, a historical literary form and the Ruta Bernardina. The architecture of the historic town centre, festivals held on several dates and municipal sports facilities offer further ways to shape your stay.
Pilgrimage and historical tradition
The Ermita de Sant Bernat is a pilgrimage chapel with a centralised floor plan. The building has two storeys and seven sides; inside is a circular central space. The exterior and interior therefore make different geometric statements: the seven-sided building encloses a round centre. At the same time, the chapel combines this architecture with its religious function.
The Paraje de Pintarrafes near Carlet has been a regionally significant place of pilgrimage and veneration almost continuously from the 13th century to the present day. A settlement from the Andalusi period and the remains of an earlier temple dedicated to Saint Bernard have been identified there. This temple stood on the site of the present-day chapel. The continuing veneration and archaeological findings offer different perspectives on Pintarrafes.
The religious tradition also includes the Gozos in honour of the martyrs Bernardo, María and Gracia. They date from the 15th century and are among the earliest examples of this form of popular literature. The tradition thus encompasses not only pilgrimage and veneration, but also an early form of literary expression.
Architecture in the historic town centre
Carlet’s historic town centre features buildings in Arab, Modernist and Baroque styles. Among its monumental sights is the façade of the former Dominican convent. The Archpriest Church also houses a polychrome carving from the 13th century. The town centre’s architecture and these two sacred landmarks offer different points of focus: the former showcases a range of architectural styles, while the latter comprise the façade of a former convent and a dated work of art.
Walking and sport
The PR-CV 421 Ruta Bernardina is a 15-kilometre linear trail connecting Carlet and Alzira. It retraces San Bernat’s flight from his birthplace in Carlet to Alzira. The route’s length and endpoints are therefore linked to a specific historical story. Those interested in the history of San Bernat will find it offers a different perspective on the subject from the buildings and pilgrimage sites.
The Poliesportiu Municipal has swimming pools for children and adults, pétanque, tennis and padel courts, and athletics and football facilities. The complex is open to the general public through a reservation system. Check current availability and seasonal access information before visiting. The sports facilities differ in how they are used from the linear Ruta Bernardina: reservations and seasonal access details are relevant to the complex, while the trail is described by its length and endpoints.
Festivals throughout the year
The festival of San Blas is celebrated in Carlet on 3 February. Food, especially anise rolls, is blessed in the church. In the days leading up to Holy Week, the Fiesta del Delantal takes place: women wear aprons with original designs, and the social afternoon includes monas, chocolate and Easter sausage.
The Fiesta del Farolillo is celebrated in July. Children make lanterns out of watermelons and then parade them through the streets. The Fiestas mayores take place on 23 July in honour of Bernardo, María and Gracia; the saints’ relics are carried in the associated pilgrimage. The dates therefore span a day in February, the days before Holy Week and two July traditions. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific event dates before your visit.
