Catarroja: Port, Nature and History
Accommodation in Catarroja
Discover Catarroja through the Port de Catarroja and the Albufera’s natural environment, through birdwatching, and through local history and traditions. These highlights can help you plan your trip: would you like to set aside time for being on the water, observing nature, or exploring historical and culinary themes?
Boat Trips and Vela Latina
The Port de Catarroja is a freshwater port and one of the main gateways to the Albufera. Boat trips are offered from here throughout the year and last approximately two hours. The trip follows a channel through the Albufera, surrounded by nature and rice fields. When planning, you can allow for the approximate duration as a separate activity; check current trip options before you travel.
Another nautical tradition is Vela Latina. The AssociaciĂł de Vela Llatina dels Peixcadors de Catarroja holds demonstrations, particularly in spring and summer, from the Port de Catarroja to the Albufera. You can watch them from the port or from accompanying boats; dates may vary. This gives your trip a different seasonal focus from the boat trips offered throughout the year.
The local fishermen’s association for Vela Latina also offers courses. Anyone interested can register as a participant. Courses are seasonal and require registration.
Nature and Birdwatching
Tancat de la Pipa is a reserve within the Parc Natural de l’Albufera. Covering 40 hectares, it includes two lagoons, an ulla, or natural water outlet, and four plots that serve as artificial wetlands. These different features shape the description of the reserve: in addition to the lagoons, it includes the water outlet and the constructed wetlands.
At the Tancat de la Pipa observatory, you can watch birds that live in the nature park and around the Port de Catarroja throughout the year. Visits to Tancat de la Pipa must be arranged in advance, so confirm the arrangements before your visit. This lets you include birdwatching in your trip plans, without confusing it with a boat trip: on the water, the focus is on the journey through the channel; at the observatory, it is on watching birds.
A route runs through Catarroja’s rice fields, from the Port de Catarroja to the mouth of the Barranc de Chiva in Lake L’Albufera.
Historic Sites and Museums
The Iglesia de San Miguel, a 17th-century church, stands in the Las Barracas neighbourhood. The Casa Palacio de Vivanco dates from the mid-18th century and is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Its main façade combines neoclassical design with late Baroque ornamentation. The two buildings offer different historical points of reference: the church represents the 17th century, while the palace is notable for its construction period and façade design.
The Museo Antonia Mir features a permanent exhibition of works by the painter Antonia Mir, who was born in Catarroja in 1928. Casa Sulema, a house museum with a large collection of relics from the port and other areas, is also located at the Port de Catarroja. These are considered to have historical and ethnological value. Visits to Casa Sulema are possible by prior arrangement.
Allipebre and Local Traditions
Allipebre is the signature dish of the Port de Catarroja. This stew is made primarily with eel from the Albufera, garlic, and paprika. These main ingredients give the dish its distinctive character and anchor it in local cuisine.
Every September, Catarroja holds the Concurs d’Allipebre, which has been running for more than 45 years. If your trip coincides with this competition, check the exact date, as dates may vary. Along with the seasonal Vela Latina demonstrations, this creates a difference in trip planning: Allipebre is on the calendar in September, while the demonstrations take place particularly in spring and summer.
