El Saler between dunes, beach and history
Accommodation in El Saler
El Saler brings together coastal landscapes and natural features with a layered local history. Playa de El Saler is located in l'Albufera Natural Park, between the marshland and the Albufera. Other defining features include the dunes of the Devesa, trails with different themes, historic buildings and military remains. If you are considering whether El Saler fits your travel plans, you can use these highlights as a guide: the landscape, the history or an activity such as golf.
Dunes, beach and nature park
The dunes of the Devesa form a distinctive, protected ecosystem on the European Mediterranean coast. One unusual dune formation is the “mallades”: they separate the lake from the sea. Together with the beach’s location within the nature park, this creates a landscape that encompasses the beach, marshland and the Albufera.
You can explore the Dehesa de El Saler on foot or by bike to discover its vegetation and wildlife. Six color-coded walking trails each have their own theme. If you want to choose a particular trail, check availability locally; conditions can change depending on the season. You can also watch migratory birds in l'Albufera Natural Park near El Saler.
The beach and trails appeal to different interests: the beach is a landmark for those who want to get their bearings along the coast, while the themed trails focus on vegetation and wildlife. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth deciding first whether you want to focus mainly on the coastal landscape or the natural features of the Dehesa.
Buildings and historical layers
Casa Forestal de El Saler was built between 1906 and 1907 in the traditional Valencian style. It was extensively renovated and refurbished to serve as a sociocultural space and interpretation center for the Devesa forest. Two plaques on its façade are recognized as Bien de Relevancia Local and date from the 18th century. The construction period and the plaques thus point to different historical layers.
Casa de la Demanà, also known as Casa de la Campaneta, also dates from the 18th century. Auctions for hunting stands in the Albufera were held in the building until the 20th century. This connects the history of a specific building with an earlier use in the Albufera area.
Another historical landmark is the El Saler bunker. Built in 1938 as a coastal artillery battery, it was made of reinforced concrete and included two casemates with anti-aircraft machine guns. Its features include an upper casemate and underground galleries covering an area of about 500 square meters. The military installation offers a different historical point of reference from the two buildings and their older façade plaques.
Planning activities and getting there
Golf adds a distinct focus to the nature and history themes. The El Saler golf course was built in 1968 by Javier Arana. The golf facility has a golf school and a practice area; program availability may change. If lessons or practice are important to your plans, check in advance to see what is currently offered.
Playa de El Saler can be reached from València on bus lines 24 and 25. Since timetable information can change, check the latest times before traveling. This lets you include the bus connection in your plans without combining the different nature, history and leisure interests into a single route.
