Enguera: Nature, Heritage and Regional Experiences

Enguera combines natural landscapes with traces of local history and regional experiences. Designated as a municipal natural area, Umbría La Plana covers 426.28 hectares and has ecological, scenic, scientific and recreational value. The area features largely natural pine forests as well as dense, diverse vegetation in gorges and shaded areas. It is also home to animal species classified as endangered. Historic Town Centre

Enguera’s historic centre features a 17th-century archpriest’s church, manor houses, a Carmelite convent and squares; the street layout is also arranged in the Arab style. While Umbría La Plana draws attention to vegetation and scenery, the focus here is on buildings and the urban layout.

Parish Church and Art

The present-day parish church of San Miguel Arcángel was built over an older temple dating from the time of James I. Inside, it houses the Retablo de la Virgen de Gracia, a Renaissance panel painting from the 15th century. The building’s history and artwork thus point to different historical periods: the older temple and the Renaissance panel.

Museum and Textile History

The Museo Enológico Enguera displays a detailed replica of a typical Enguera house and square. It depicts several periods from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the second half of the 20th century. The museum also includes a collection on Enguera’s textile industry from the 18th to the 21st century. The two focus areas also differ in their time span: the replica depicts later periods, while the textile collection covers a longer period.

Cucos and Other Activities

The Cucos of the Sierra de Enguera are small and medium-sized dry-stone structures in the dry farmland. The Cucos Route begins at the ADENE premises next to the El Vapor industrial estate on Camino de la Fuente Cáñez; the first Cuco open to visitors is in the ADENE garden. Olive Oil and Crafts
