Estivella between hiking trails and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Estivella
Estivella combines historic buildings with natural connections to the Sierra Calderona and local festival traditions. If you are looking for a hotel in Estivella, you can choose what to focus on based on your trip: the bridge, chapel and castle each represent different architectural and historical stories; hiking trails, wildlife and festivals offer their own highlights. This makes it possible to consider which themes you want to shape your stay before booking.
Buildings from different periods
The Pont d’Estivella combines a clear architectural history with striking dimensions. Its construction began in 1791 under the direction of Valencian architect Vicent Gascó. The bridge has three arches, is 90 metres long in total and reaches a maximum height of 11 metres above ground level. The Els Arcs aqueduct offers a different architectural feature: its current structure was built after 1581 and consists of twelve arches of various shapes. It is part of the Acequia Mayor de Sagunto.
The Cisterna Nova was completed in 1854. Its structure includes an outer chamber with access to a staircase, a barrel vault, a basin and two large round arches. The Ermita de la Creu del GarbĂ takes visitors back to an earlier period: a cross was erected on the mountain in 1787, and the chapel itself was built in 1804. Its roof is supported by four arches; the chapel was restored in 1993.
The Castillo de Beselga in Estivella dates back to the 15th century and includes a much older Almohad tower from the 12th century. Part of the fortification’s masonry has been preserved and is visible. The remains can be explored via installed stairs and railings; information panels explain their history. The two construction periods of the tower and castle complex provide a clear historical contrast for visitors.
The Church of Santos Juanes also offers a distinctive glimpse of local cultural heritage: its main altar is gilded, well preserved and considered a rare example of its kind. This provides another tangible point of interest for anyone interested in architectural and art history, alongside the bridge, aqueduct, chapel and castle.
Hiking trails, wildlife and natural areas
Estivella has hiking trails and paths with views of GarbĂ in the Sierra Calderona Natural Park. Font del Barraix lies in the heart of the Sierra Calderona and is considered a meeting point for people who want to hike or cycle there. The GR 10 turnoff is also relevant for a through-hike: it leads to Estivella via the Azagador de Beselga. The town has all services and public transport; a through-hike can be started or finished here. Check public transport before setting off.
The Sierra Calderona near Estivella is home to birds of prey such as short-toed eagles, goshawks, sparrowhawks and eagle owls. The Spanish pond turtle and other reptiles are also found there. At the same time, the Sierra Calderona is designated as a Special Protection Area for Birds. Whether you spot a particular species depends on luck and the time of year. The Puntal de l’Abella area in Estivella is also designated as a floristic micro-reserve.
Festivals and local traditions
The Sant Blai festival on 3 February features Calderas and Coquetes de Sant Blai, as well as a mass and procession. Another festival in honour of the saint from the Ermita de Beselga is celebrated in town for a week in August. It includes dances, a mass, fireworks, processions and a pilgrimage. If a festival is a deciding factor in your travel plans, check the exact event dates in advance.
