Gestalgar: Fortress, trails and regional cuisine
Accommodation in Gestalgar
You can tailor a stay in Gestalgar to focus on culture, trails or regional cuisine. Castillo de los Murones, the Los Calicantos Aqueduct, a circular route of around two hours, and the regionâs dishes each reveal a different side of the town. As you plan, consider which of these interests you most and how much time you would like to set aside for it.
Castle ruins, palace and religious building
Castillo de los Murones is designated a Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) and is a 12th-century Muslim fortress. The enclosure structures remain; the cistern in the castle courtyard is the only surviving building. These two features offer a tangible impression of the ruinsâ surviving fabric.
Palacio de los Condes de l'Alcudia y Gestalgar is also known as Casa Señorial and Torre de los Condes de lâAlcĂșdia. The 17th-century palace was the residence of the local lords. Another architectural landmark is Iglesia Parroquial de la PurĂsima ConcepciĂłn, an 18th-century Neoclassical religious building. Ermita Santos AbdĂłn y SenĂ©n has an atrium with arches and a bell gable. Its exterior grounds include a Stations of the Cross and small chapels.
Aqueduct and routes
Two sections are visible at the Los Calicantos Aqueduct: one is cut into the rock, and the other is excavated. The excavated section is about 30 metres long and has an overflow channel. This makes it possible to compare the different construction methods of the two sections side by side. The remains of Presa Vieja date from the early 20th century and add to the picture of the historic waterworks.
The Ruta Familiar is a circular route of about 4.5 kilometres, taking approximately two hours to complete. This estimated length and duration offer a guide for planning your time. Trail conditions can vary seasonally. A cultural route in Gestalgar has 15 explanatory panels in total, one at each stop.
The PR-CV 290 hiking trail crosses the municipal areas of Gestalgar, Sot de Chera and Chulilla. It connects places that are close to one another but separated by roads. The Ruta Familiar and the PR-CV 290 can be distinguished by their stated features: one is described as a circular route with an approximate duration and length, while the other is described by its course through three municipal areas.
Rock art, cave and recreation area
The rock paintings in Abrigo de las Clochas include examples of Levantine, macro-schematic and schematic art. The two rock shelters are in the Barranco de las Colochas or Clochas ravine, between Pico de Santa MarĂa and Pico del Burgal. Those interested in rock art will find several artistic classifications at a clearly identified landscape site.
Sima de la Tierra de Roya contains, among other features, stalactites and stalagmites. Access is reserved for specialists, particularly cavers. A key can be requested from the town hall; however, making a request does not grant general access.
The Ărea Recreativa de la Peña MarĂa recreation area offers shade beneath a large mulberry tree, water from one of Gestalgarâs most significant springs, and stone tables and benches. As facilities may change, check their current condition before visiting. A bathing area in Gestalgar is designated a âplaya continental,â or inland beach. Swimming conditions and access may vary seasonally, so take this into account when planning your visit.
Patron saint festival and regional cuisine
The patron saint festivities in honour of San Blas are celebrated on 2 February. The programme includes a Eucharistic celebration, the distribution of small candles, Vaquillas, the Toro embolado and dances; individual events may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around the occasion, check the dates and programme for your visit.
Traditional Gestalgar cuisine includes Arroz con caricas, Arroz con bierzas, Olla âsulsiaâ, Gazpacho and Ajo arriero. These dishes are a distinct culinary highlight alongside the buildings, trails and natural attractions. When choosing accommodation, you can first decide whether you are visiting Gestalgar mainly for its history, a route, its festival traditions or regional cuisine.
