Guadasequies offers several clearly distinct themes for a stay: church art, recurring festivals, regional cuisine, and routes on foot or by bike. Some of the oldest houses have been preserved in the town centre; church buildings from different periods add to the cultural attractions. The Bellús Reservoir is also part of the town’s history and shapes the views described here. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around culture, festival dates or outdoor activities. The places and routes below provide specific points of reference.

Churches, Art and Local History

The parish church of Our Lady of Hope is a neoclassical building dating from the early 18th century and is classified as a Bien de Relevancia Local (BRL), or Local Heritage Asset. The former church houses a local museum with a collection of liturgical objects. Some of the oldest houses have been preserved in the town centre.

The new Church of Our Lady of Hope dates from 1996 to 2000; its colourful stained-glass windows add a distinctive touch. It houses the Marian image “Esperança nova” by sculptor Damià Pastor. A replica of Roderic d’Osona’s Gothic panel “San Miguel de Guadasséquies” can be seen in the Church of Our Lady of Hope. Together, these works showcase different artistic forms and periods.

The Hermitage of Christ of Amparo was built in the early 20th century in the upper part of town. It contains a Baroque painting of Christ of Amparo dating from the mid-18th century. The Calvary, a cypress garden dating from 1906, is also in the upper part of town.

Reservoir, Valley Views and Routes

From a viewpoint in the upper part of town, you can look out over the valley. Next to the former church is a recreation area overlooking the Bellús Reservoir. Part of Guadasséquies was flooded by the reservoir that stands there today, so the landscape is also linked to the town’s history.

Rural paths run through Guadasequies past springs, old farmhouses and orchards. They are suitable for walking and cycling on unpaved tracks. The Route of the Four Villages of the River connects Guadasequies with AlfarrasĂ, Sempere and Benissuera, and is considered easy to moderate.

The GR 160 E12 reaches the town from Bellús and leaves it along an unpaved path that runs parallel to the road towards Sempere. Another route reference is the La Defensa del Sur route: Guadasequies is listed as a place on the 270.74-kilometre Xàtiva–Biar stage. This figure refers to the entire stage, not to an individual section of trail in the town. This helps distinguish the local connection between the four villages from the longer stage as separate route references.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The festival in honour of Sant Antoni Abat takes place on the weekend closest to 17 January. It includes a large bonfire, a communal dinner, a procession, the blessing of the animals and children’s games. The Moors and Christians festival is celebrated on the first weekend of August; the Entrada de Moros i Cristians takes place on Saturday.

The main patron saint festivals are held in the second week of August in honour of Sant Roc, Our Lady of Hope and Christ of Amparo. The festival of Our Lady of Hope is also celebrated on 18 December. It includes lighting a large bonfire beside the old church, followed by a communal TorrĂ  dinner around the fire. The exact dates of the August festivals may vary from year to year, and the programme for 18 December may also change. Check the latest festival information before travelling.

Regional Cuisine

Some of the most representative dishes of the local cuisine are Puchero and oven-baked Cazuela with rice, beans and turnips. If you would like to include regional food culture in your travel plans, these dishes offer a specific taste of the town’s culinary character.
