Jativa between the fortress, old town and museums
Accommodation in Jativa
Jativa offers plenty to explore for a stay focused on history and culture, from a twin fortress and protected historic sites to museums with art and archaeological collections. Nearby Cova Negra also offers a glimpse of the region’s nature and prehistoric past. You can choose what to focus on during your stay according to the topics that interest you most.
Fortress, Old Town and Walking Tour
Castell de Xàtiva is a twin fortress comprising Castell Menor and Castell Major. The fortress offers panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. Castell de Xàtiva is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. As visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to check access in advance.
The old town is also designated as a heritage site: in 1982, it was granted the designation Conjunto Histórico-Artístico. The Ruta de los Borja is a walking tour that connects various sites and buildings in the historic city. It leads to places associated with the Borja family, offering a distinct way to explore the town’s history. Access arrangements may vary from one site to another.
Churches and Their Architectural History
Iglesia de Sant Feliu was built in 1265, following the Christian conquest by Jaume I. It stands on the remains of a former Visigothic cathedral and has a Romanesque portal, one of the few examples of this architectural style in the Valencian region. Its construction date, earlier building and portal point to different historical and architectural aspects of the same site.
Art and Archaeology in the Museums
Museo de Bellas Artes de Xàtiva holds one of the most important public painting collections in the Comunitat Valenciana. Artists represented include Ribera, Goya, Vicente López, Santiago Rusiñol, Benlliure and Antoni Miró. Alongside its permanent exhibition, the museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions; the programme may change. The collection brings together works by a range of artists, while temporary exhibitions introduce additional themes.
Museo del Almodí is housed in a former grain exchange built in the mid-16th century. As an archaeological museum, it features objects from the Iberian, Roman, Visigothic and Muslim periods. These four periods offer different points of reference for a museum visit. The displays may be rearranged, so particular objects or themes may not always be presented in the same way.
Cova Negra: Nature and Prehistory
Near Jativa, Cova Negra is a 57-hectare municipal natural area of ecological and cultural-historical value. Riverside and mountain vegetation shape the landscape. You can hike and mountain bike on the paths at Cova Negra; check trail conditions locally. Cova Negra is also an archaeological site and is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. It contributes to our understanding of European prehistory and Neanderthal life.
Plan Your Journey and Dates
Xàtiva’s ADIF railway station is within the city, on Avenida Ausiàs March, about ten minutes from the historic centre. RENFE commuter line C-2 connects València Nord, Xàtiva and Moixent. If you are travelling by train, check the latest timetable and service information for the line.
La Fira d’Agost takes place every year from 15 to 20 August in the streets and squares of Xàtiva. The programme includes fairground attractions, market stalls and cultural activities. If the fair is important to your travel plans, check the dates and programme in advance.
Then compare the stated locations of specific hotels with your plans. The historic sites, museum offerings, natural surroundings and C-2 train connection each provide different ways to shape your stay.
