L’Alcúdia: Heritage, Museums and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in L'Alcúdia
L’Alcúdia’s defining themes include the history of irrigation, church architecture, museums and archaeological remains. There are also cycling and environmental routes with different focuses: some combine heritage and landscape, while others draw attention to habitats and species. When choosing a hotel, it may therefore be worth first considering whether you want to plan your stay around culture, a particular route or a specific event date. If a date or route is important to your plans, check the latest information in advance.
Irrigation Structure and Churches
The Aqüeducte de Santa Bàrbara was built in 1842 as part of L’Alcúdia’s irrigation system. It is 260 metres long and overcomes a three-metre height difference for irrigation. The structure is comprehensively protected. Its length and height difference help convey the scale of this water-engineering heritage.
The Temple Sant Andreu Apòstol is an 18th-century church; its cornerstone was laid on 30 November 1746. Its great size has earned it the local name “la Catedral de la Ribera.” The building now known as Hort de Manus dates back to the beginning of the 17th century.
Museums and Collections
The restored Casa de la Solera houses both the Museu de la Música and the Museu Etnològic de l’Alcúdia. The Casa is a former manor house typical of the 18th century. The Museu de la Música has a permanent exhibition of instruments donated by the master musician Manuel Celdrán. Exhibition details may change; check the latest information about the displays before planning a visit.
The Museu Etnològic documents part of L’Alcúdia’s more recent collective history. Its themes include agricultural tools, classified according to whether the work was done using manual or animal power. The two museums therefore have different focuses: one displays musical instruments, while the other connects recent history with agricultural work.
Further archaeological finds from L’Alcúdia are displayed in the Biblioteca Municipal. Since displays may change, it is worth checking the latest information before visiting.
Archaeology and Historical Layers
Els Évols is an Iberian necropolis in the municipality of L’Alcúdia. Dating from the 4th to the 1st century BC, it adds a much earlier historical period to the themes of church architecture and manor houses. The archaeological finds in the Biblioteca Municipal offer another connection to the town’s history.
Cycling Routes and Nature
The Volta a Tous starts in L’Alcúdia, is 51.72 kilometres long and offers views of part of the mountains with their significant natural heritage. The Volta a la Ribera del Xúquer is 107.9 kilometres long, passes through L’Alcúdia and is a circular route connecting the coast and inland areas. It also offers the opportunity to visit heritage sites. Its length, circular form and landscape setting give this route a different character from the Volta a Tous, whose starting point and mountain setting are its distinctive features.
The Ruta del Caqui combines heritage with the Ribera del Xúquer landscape shaped by persimmon cultivation. The PARATGES environmental route offers a different way to explore: it is a walk around a local natural area that draws attention to habitats and the species found there. The exact route may vary.
L’Alcúdia also takes part in the PARATGES-RUTES MEDIAMBIENTAL DE LA RIBERA programme. Organised by the Consorci de la Ribera, the programme includes guided visits to natural sites or areas of particular ecological value in the Ribera del Xúquer. Operations and dates may vary. The natural area known as Els Fornals is also located near L’Alcúdia.
Events and Travel Planning
The Fira Gastronòmica de l’Alcúdia has been held continuously since 1995. Dates and programme details may vary; check the latest information if the event is relevant to your stay. This helps you plan your trip around the things that bring you to L’Alcúdia: heritage, archaeological history, cycling or nature.
