Manises: Ceramics, Museums and Historic Routes
Accommodation in Manises
Manises is best explored through its ceramic heritage. When planning your trip, you can choose from several points of focus: an extensive collection, historic buildings, workshop demonstrations or a cultural programme with scheduled events. This makes it easier to decide which experiences and visits you would like to prioritise.
Ceramic Collection and History of Education
The Museo de Cerámica de Manises was founded in 1967, following the donation of a manor house dating from the late 18th century and a collection of works of art and ceramics. Its monographic collection comprises more than 5,000 items. It documents local production from the 14th century to the present day, offering a historical overview of Manises’ ceramic tradition. The museum’s technology room and library also provide information about ceramic factories, workshops and shops in Manises.
Education also has a long history here: the Escola de Cerà mica de Manises dates back to 1896. In 1916, it was officially recognised as a state training centre under the name Escola Prà ctica de Cerà mica. The Antigua Escuela de Cerámica is a historic building in the neoclassical style. From 1916 to 1925, it housed Manises’ first ceramics school. Another glimpse into the industrial heritage can be found at the Barrio arqueológico de obradores, now called Barri dels Obradors. For almost eight centuries, a large part of ceramic production was concentrated there.
Buildings and Other Collections
Visitors interested in architecture and historic buildings will find a variety of examples. The Els Arcs aqueduct is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It has 28 arches and is attributed to Roman and medieval origins. The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista was built between 1734 and 1751. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, with a single nave. Inside, the original ceramic tile dado and the dome covered in gold tiles with a metallic lustre have been preserved.
The MUMAF – ColecciĂłn Museográfica de FotografĂa de Manises, Carlos Sanchis, offers a different kind of collection. It focuses on significant analogue cameras from a period spanning the final decades of the 19th century to the advent of digital photography. The photography museum thus complements the ceramic themes with a distinct technical and cultural-historical focus.
Walks and Hands-on Ceramics Experiences
The “Paisaje Cerámico del Centro Histórico” is an urban route that you can enjoy as an outdoor walk at any time of year. Before your visit, check whether any temporary access restrictions apply. The Ruta de la Cerámica introduces you to Manises’ ceramic history through significant buildings, monuments and gardens. Groups of 15 to 50 people can book the route; a guide from the Oficina de Turismo de Manises is subject to availability on your chosen date. The route is offered in Spanish, Valencian, Galician, English, French, German and Italian. Check in advance which language is available for your visit.
The workshops offer different insights into how ceramics are made. At Cerámicas Palanca, visitors can follow the step-by-step process of making traditional yellow faience mortars. At the Taller de Arturo Mora, the production of lustreware is explained, a piece is demonstrated on the potter’s wheel, and visitors are invited to try the wheel themselves. The visits offered depend on the workshops’ current activities.
Plan Your Festival Visit, Family Activity and Stay
The “Conoce Manises” treasure hunt is a family activity featuring ten challenges that introduce the local ceramic tradition, which is more than 700 years old; check current availability before making plans. At the Festa de la Cerà mica, visitors can watch ceramic crafts being made, see a range of techniques and create something themselves. The festival takes place on the weekend before 19 July; check that year’s programme and dates before travelling. The Sant Joan celebrations also include the traditional Ball dels Coveteres, which has been revived in recent years. The Bienal Internacional de Cerámica de Manises is an international competition for contemporary ceramics by artists, organised by the Ayuntamiento de Manises. If you are travelling for an event, check the programme for the relevant edition.
Manises is connected to Valencia by metro lines 3, 5 and 9. As timetables are important for planning, check the connections before you travel. Nature can also be a focus of your visit: the Parque Natural del Turia extends partly into the municipality of Manises.
