Marines: Discover Landscapes and History
Accommodation in Marines
Marines can be explored from different perspectives: the landscapes of Serra Calderona Natural Park sit alongside historic buildings, festive traditions and a distinctive local specialty. If you choose a destination based on the themes you want to shape your stay, nature, architecture and regional culture offer different points of interest. The following highlights range from springs and hiking options to places in Marines Viejo and traditional celebrations.
Landscapes, Springs and Hiking Options
The municipality of Marines encompasses some of the most beautiful landscapes, springs and mountains in Serra Calderona Natural Park. For hiking enthusiasts, two routes offer different experiences: the PRV-8 passes through scenic areas, while the Ruta del Agua takes you to explore several springs in the Sierra Calderona. Choosing between the two descriptions means focusing either on the scenery or on exploring multiple springs.
The Área Recreativa Fuente del Rincón picnic area is also in Marines. Together with the landscapes, mountains and springs of the natural park, it offers another specific way to enjoy nature. Which of these themes appeals to you most can guide how you plan your visit to Marines; the routes and the picnic area each offer a distinct point of interest.
Marines Viejo: Architecture and Historic Sites
In Marines Viejo, you can visit the Iglesia del Santísimo Cristo del Perdón. The character of the town is also reflected in its cobbled streets and houses: their forms are typical of Valencia and combine with architecture influenced by Aragon. The buildings and streets thus bring together different regional design traditions.
Another historic landmark is Torre Olla. The square tower stands in a former Arab settlement. Over the centuries, an alquería developed around it and remained in use until the 19th century. The tower can be seen in the distance from Marines Viejo. Its history thus links the earlier settlement with the later development of the alquería and its use up to the 19th century.
Castillo del Real is an 11th-century Islamic fortress on the boundary between Marines Viejo and Olocau. Alongside the church, tower and townscape, it offers another historical perspective: Castillo del Real dates to the 11th century and is located on the boundary between the two towns.
Festivals and Local Cuisine
The Festa de San Antonio brings together several traditional elements. At dusk, a large bonfire is lit in the square, and the celebrations also include dancing and a nighttime torrà. The festivities include the blessing of animals and the distribution of caldereta and rollos. The rollos are made according to traditional recipes in communal ovens.
The Fiestas Patronales, as described, have their main day on August 6. The program includes exhibitions, classical music concerts, open-air dances and mascletàs. Marines' local cuisine also has a distinctive specialty: ollica de cardos. You can distinguish cultural interests in buildings and local history from festival traditions and regional cuisine, rather than reducing all these themes to a single focus for your visit.
