Ontinyent can be explored through a range of themes: medieval urban history, architecture, textile production and routes with their own distinct focus. If you are planning a stay, these differences can help you put your interests at the center. La Vila tells the story of the town’s historic roots; museums take you through different periods and themes, while the routes highlight individual places and aspects.

La Vila and historic buildings

La Vila is the historic heart of Ontinyent. It was designated a historic-artistic complex in the 1970s and preserves one of the most representative medieval ensembles in the Valencian lands. A route leads through historic streets and Atzucacs to important buildings. Remains of the old wall and towers that formed part of the original fortified complex are also hidden among today’s houses.

The buildings include the Church of Santa MarĂa. It was probably built between the 14th and 16th centuries on the site of a former Islamic mosque. Inside, a Gothic ribbed vault resting on spiral pilasters shapes the space; the main portal, dating from 1530, is designed in the Renaissance style.

The Pont Vell dates from 1500. Its masonry is made of dressed stone blocks and has withstood every flood of the Clariano over the centuries. Ontinyent’s focus thus includes both individual architectural features and the long history of a structure.

Museums: archaeology, textiles and festival history

The MAOVA (Museo Arqueológico de Ontinyent y La Vall d’Albaida) is housed in the former Almudí building, dating from the 16th to 17th centuries. Two large exhibition areas present history from the Late Paleolithic to the modern era. This broad time span clearly distinguishes the archaeological theme from Ontinyent’s specialized textile history.

The FundaciĂł Museu Textil de la Comunitat Valenciana is housed in the former Hilados Manuel Revert Nadal spinning mill at Calle MĂşsico Ăšbeda No. 6. Objects dating from the 18th century to the present illustrate traditional textile production processes. The four rooms are devoted to tools, manufacturing, textiles and audiovisual content. This makes it possible to explore the subject through both objects and the individual stages of textile work.

The Museu Fester d’Ontinyent displays emblematic pieces related to the Moors and Christians festival and traces its history. For 2026, the festival is recognized as a festival of international tourist interest; for later editions, you should check the designation again. Coca de Fira is also part of the festival tradition: this oven-baked pie is prepared with bacon, sausages, the well-known onion botifarras and Pebrassos, or mushrooms.

Routes and outdoor activities

The air-raid shelter route explores Ontinyent’s history during the Spanish Civil War and gives visitors the opportunity to see inside recently restored air-raid shelters. The Chimneys Route has a different focus: the walking path leads to factory chimneys around the historic center. It is less than three kilometers long and takes about an hour on foot.

Fuset offers four different themed routes. There is a recreational area equipped with facilities and tables, as well as signposted paths that start and end in Fuset. Alongside the historic routes in the town, there are also options with their own distinct themes.
