Petrés: Heritage, Festivals and Historic Waterworks
Accommodation in Petrés
Petrés reveals itself through its heritage: protected buildings, historic waterworks and recurring festivals. A cultural and historical route, with explanatory signs at the main sights, provides a tangible framework for the town’s history. This allows you to explore architecture, water engineering and festival traditions as distinct themes, rather than combining them into a single tour or focus.
History and Architecture
The Casa-Castillo del Barón de Petrés is classified as a protected monument of Valencian cultural heritage. The Iglesia Parroquial de San Jaime Apóstol also shapes the town’s historic architecture: it dates back to the 18th century, and its tower has four bells. Its construction period and the detail of its tower offer two specific points of reference for understanding the church.
The old medieval oven, which belonged to the lord of Petrés, stood at C/ Concepció 8. The coat of arms of the Aguiló family can be seen on the façade in the same street.
The cisterns also tell the story of different uses. L’Aixeta is a medieval cistern that now serves as an exhibition space and houses an ethnological museum. The Pou is also a medieval cistern; it served as the palace’s well. Comparing the two takes you from a present-day museum use to a historic palace function.
Water Heritage and Landscape
Petrés’s hydraulic heritage includes cisterns, irrigation channels and water dividers. These different features bring water engineering to life, from storage and conveyance to distribution. L’Aljub adds to this picture as a 19th-century cistern. It lies outside Petrés on the Ponera or Palmosa branch of the Séquia Major de Sagunt.
The town’s location is also important for understanding its landscape: Petrés lies on the plain in front of the Calderona and Espadán mountain ranges.
Other Historic Buildings
L’Hort Tancat is a building in the Huerta that has been documented since the 17th century; it may have been built as early as the 15th or 16th century. The two dates should be kept distinct: documentation begins in the 17th century, while an earlier construction date is possible but not certain. The Horno Viejo was in use until the 20th century. The Almazara de Petrés is a historic building.
The Ermita de Santo Domingo offers a different connection to the surroundings, as it is surrounded by natural landscape. Along with the historic buildings, it adds a landscape dimension to the picture of Petrés, while the cisterns and churches reveal other aspects of the town’s local heritage.
Festivals Throughout the Year
The Festa dels Xiquets takes place every year on the day after the Purísima, which is celebrated on the last Sunday in August. The Festa includes a procession featuring the traditional Balls dels Nanos, as well as music with the tabalet and dolçaina. This calendar sequence makes the Festa a distinct event within August.
Petrés also celebrates patron saint festivals in honour of El Salvador in August. In September, patron saint festivals are held in honour of the Purísima Concepción. The different festivals can therefore be distinguished by occasion and month. If you want to plan your trip around a celebration, check the date of the event in advance.
Routes and Visit Planning
The Castillo de Petrés con Tren Turístico route runs from Playa de Canet to Petrés and includes the Ermita at Calvario. If you plan to take this route, check the operating arrangements before booking. This allows you to consider the excursion separately from the town routes focused on cultural history and water heritage.
