Picanya combines local history with historic buildings, a themed route and paths through the Huerta landscape. If you’re looking for a hotel in Picanya, it helps to first choose the focus of your visit: architectural heritage, the history of nature and water management, or one of the town’s festival traditions.

Alquerías and the historic town centre

Picanya’s origins are traced to a Muslim alquería, which James I transferred to the Hospitaller Order in 1238, together with Torrent, during the Reconquista. The location of the old town also tells a story of this early history: its surroundings lie near the former Alquerías de Sant Joan del Mercat and de Martí and form the first known urban centre. The Alquería de Raga, also of Muslim origin, is considered one of Picanya’s oldest monuments and one especially valued by local residents.

Another point of interest is the Alquería de la Foia. It lies in the north of the municipal area, in the Huerta de Benàger north of the Barranco de Chiva, and can be reached via the Camí de la Foia. The Huerta de Benàger landscape includes typical alquerías and an irrigation tradition with channels dating back to the Andalusian period. The alquería and the cultivated landscape around it can thus be viewed as different but connected aspects of local history.

Architecture and cultural venues

The Església de la Verge de Montserrat is a Renaissance church dating from the 17th century. Its interior has three naves, and its floor plan follows the shape of a Latin cross. The Centre Cultural offers a different architectural accent: built in 1910, the building has a Modernist façade and an eclectic appearance. Today, it serves as a cultural centre for performances and events.

The Ateneu is another of Picanya’s distinctive civic buildings and is considered a particularly worthwhile place for visitors to see. Together with the church and the Centre Cultural, it offers another perspective on the town’s architectural heritage. The buildings described range from a religious building with a clearly defined floor plan to civic and cultural buildings, each with its own character.

Ruta del Agua and cycle routes

The Ruta del Agua is a walking route through Picanya where you can discover the town’s cultural, water-management and natural features. Stops mentioned along the route include the Molí de la Villa and the Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza. The route therefore brings together different themes that also play a role in the history of the Huerta and its irrigation.

If you’d rather explore the town by bike, Picanya has a network of cycle routes stretching for more than 18 kilometres within the municipal area. It offers panoramic views across the Huerta and passes areas with numerous tree species. There is also a Metrovalencia station on lines 1, 2 and 7 for connections to Valencia. The cycle routes and the metro serve different purposes: the metro connects Picanya with Valencia, while the cycle network offers views of the landscape within the municipal area. For specific journeys, it’s advisable to check the current timetable.

Festivals and local cuisine

Picanya’s Festes Majors include street parades, music and theatre performances, festive processions, religious processions and floral offerings. The Corpus Christi celebration includes a flower carpet for the procession and traditional dances. The Sant Antoni Abad tradition includes a public blessing of animals, especially horses and donkeys. The Falles are celebrated from 15 to 19 March; programme details may vary. If a festival is important to your travel plans, check the latest event information.

Local cuisine also offers a taste of the region. The rice dishes mentioned include paella, arròs a banda, a typical seafood dish, and arròs amb fesols i naps with beef and pork.
