Puig offers travelers several points of interest: historic buildings, beaches, outdoor activities and Valencian dishes. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay here, you can start by considering whether culture, the coast or local food will shape your travel plans most.

Monastery, Charterhouse and Historic Buildings

The Royal Monastery of Santa María del Puig brings together a variety of spaces and architectural styles. The complex includes two cloisters, a Gothic hall, the Salón Real, the Hall of the Order of the Knights of el Puig and the church. The original church is single-naved and was built in 1238 on the orders of James I. Guided tours take visitors through the monastery’s main spaces; check the schedule before you arrive.

Another historic building is the Cartuja de Ara Christi. Built in 1585, it comprises a church, a main cloister, two smaller cloisters, a chapter house, a refectory, gardens and stables. In 1996, it was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Monument. Its history offers a different perspective on Puig’s architectural heritage, distinct from the multifaceted complex of the Royal Monastery.

The Ermita de Sant Jordi also commemorates a specific event: the Battle of El Puig took place at the chapel’s site in 1237. Allegorical mosaics inside depict the battle. Visits are possible by prior reservation as part of the theatrical route “La espada perdida de Jaume I.”

The Torre de Guaita was built in the second half of the 16th century to defend against Algerian pirates and was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2002. Together with the chapel and religious buildings, it highlights the area’s different historical themes: remembrance of the battle, monastic life and defense.

Art, Views and Activities

Several rooms of the Museu de la Impremta i de les Arts Gràfiques are located inside the Royal Monastery of Santa María del Puig. Its three independent yet complementary collections explore the history of printing and graphic arts in the Comunitat Valenciana. The museum’s staff describe it as Spain’s first printing museum and Europe’s second most important, after the one in Mainz.

To discover public art, follow the “ruta de las esculturas.” This self-guided walk features eleven works by prominent Valencian artists. Another activity is the “Gymkana familiar en la naturaleza”: along a route through the beaches of El Puig, visitors learn about the flora and fauna of dune ecosystems while solving fun challenges.

The Ermita de Santa Bárbara offers panoramic views of El Puig’s coastal area and its surroundings. Elsewhere in El Puig, you can enjoy views of the town, the sea, the Huerta and the Sierra Calderona. These landscape views complement the historic buildings with perspectives on the coast, agricultural surroundings and mountains.

Beaches and Regional Cuisine

Playa de Santa Elvira-La Torreta is 750 meters long and made up of sand, rubble and gravel. A series of breakwaters creates small coves. The beaches of El Puig have restrooms, playgrounds, sports areas, walkways and a surveillance service. Play-Puig beach also has an accessible beach area. As beach facilities can change, check what’s available before your visit.

Regional cuisine also offers a distinct focus for planning your trip. In El Puig, you can try Mediterranean dishes such as “arròs a banda,” “arròs del senyoret,” “fideuà de pato” and “Olla de Santa Pere.” The Jornadas Gastronómicas del Puig takes place every spring. It features menus from local restaurants, all of which share a common ingredient: traditional seasonal vegetables from the comarca de l’Horta Nord. If you’re planning to attend the event, check the dates for your travel period.

You can choose from a range of themes when deciding what to focus on during your stay: monastic and architectural history, art and landscapes, time at the beaches or regional dishes. This lets you explore Puig according to the interests that matter most for your trip.
