Xeraco between the beach, marshland and local history
Accommodation in Xeraco
When choosing a hotel in Xeraco, it is worth matching your interests to the different aspects of the town: Playa de Xeraco, the Marjal de la Safor and historic buildings. You can tailor your stay to the beach and swimming, trails through the wetland, or architecture and history. The highlights below offer specific ideas to help you decide.
Beach and getting there
Playa de Xeraco has fine, golden sand and a belt of dunes covered in Mediterranean vegetation. The beach is adapted for swimming by people with reduced mobility. Beach services may be seasonal, so check which facilities are available at the time of your visit. In 2025, a public transport service connected the railway station with Playa de Xeraco. If you plan to use this connection, check the current timetable, as transport services can change.
Marjal de la Safor
Xeraco is part of the 1,225.34-hectare Marjal de la Safor environmental area. It covers the municipal areas of Tavernes de la Valldigna, Xeraco, Xeresa and Gandia; the wetland therefore extends beyond Xeraco. This environmental area has an extensive network of local walking and cycling trails.
Walking and cycling
The Ruta del Riu Vaca offers opportunities to observe the biodiversity of a wetland along the Riu Vaca and its surroundings; you can follow it on foot or by bicycle. The PR-V 183 walking trail starts in the municipality of Xeraco. Check local trail conditions before setting out; signage on the Ruta del Riu Vaca may also change.
Buildings and local history
The smaller bell tower of the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is identified as a former minaret of the original mosque. The Ermita del Santísimo Cristo de la Agonía is a single-nave chapel dating from the 19th century, dedicated to the Santísimo Cristo de la Agonía, the patron saint of Xeraco. The bell tower is notable for its historical identification as a former minaret, while the chapel is notable for its dedication to the patron saint.
The Torre de Guaita is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and offers views of the river and local flora and fauna. La Cisterna is an underground stone structure with a barrel vault that was used to collect water from underground flows. A barrel vault is a continuous, longitudinal vaulted ceiling. These structures therefore bring together different features: a protected landmark with views, a chapel with a named dedication, and a former water-collection structure.
Cuisine and festival traditions
Dishes highlighted in Xeraco include Arroz al horno, with or without a crust, rice-stuffed peppers and Valencian paella. Arroz al horno is therefore available in two versions, with or without a crust.
The patron saint festivities in honour of the Crist de l’Agonia take place in the first week of August; Falles are also celebrated in Xeraco. The specific programme may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the event dates.
