Xirivella: Architecture, History and Cuisine
Accommodation in Xirivella
Xirivella combines religious architecture, a historic town center, agricultural heritage and regional cuisine. Specific reasons to visit include a 17th-century parish church, historic buildings dating from the 14th century and the annual Mostra Internacional de Pallasses i Pallassos de Xirivella. The themes range from architectural history to an event whose dates may be relevant when planning your trip.
Parish Church and Religious Imagery
The parish church Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Salud is considered Xirivella’s most important building. Dating from the 17th century, it has a Latin cross floor plan, a bell tower and side chapels. The Latin cross floor plan describes the layout of the religious building; the bell tower and side chapels are other features of its architecture.
The religious heritage also includes numerous ceramic altarpieces on building facades, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Among the altarpieces, Stations of the Cross depict various scenes from Holy Week. Another perspective is offered by the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Salud, a small religious building with a simple white facade. According to local tradition, the image that gave the hermitage its name is said to have been found at this site.
Old Town and Historic Buildings
Xirivella’s old town retains a layout of Arab origin. Narrow streets and some old houses that still stand there are part of this historic townscape. La Closa is a restored 14th-century building in the former Cap de Baix. Casa del Dau is also a restored 14th-century building; rent payments to the Order of Calatrava were made there. The two buildings thus represent different historical points of interest: La Closa is associated with the former Cap de Baix, while Casa del Dau is associated with a specific payment practice.
Huerta and Agricultural Heritage
Xirivella is surrounded by the Huerta landscape. Its agricultural heritage includes irrigation wells, farmhouses and traditional cebere structures where onions were stored. Together, these features offer a glimpse of the town’s rural side, alongside its religious buildings and old town. You can explore the agricultural heritage on foot, following a route or taking a walk.
Mostra and When to Visit
The Mostra Internacional de Pallasses i Pallassos de Xirivella takes place every year and is recognized as an event of provincial tourist interest. In addition to comedy performances, the program includes street entertainment activities, exhibitions, conferences, tributes, courses and workshops. Unlike the historic buildings, the Mostra is tied to specific dates for trip planning. Since individual program items may vary, check the dates before your trip.
Regional Cuisine
Xirivella’s cuisine includes rice dishes such as paella, arròs al forn and arròs amb fessols i naps. Typical sausages include botifarres de ceba and botifarres en oli. The culinary focus thus ranges from rice dishes to types of sausage, adding another dimension to the town alongside its history and agricultural heritage.
