If you are looking for a hotel in Yátova for a trip, the town’s nature and cultural experiences can shape your plans. Tabarla and the Cueva de las Palomas offer contrasting landscapes; trails such as the PRV-115 pass through an area shaped by agriculture, forests and dry-stone walls. In the town and surrounding area, buildings also tell stories of medieval, Baroque and earlier rural history.

Nature and trails around Yátova

The Paraje Natural Municipal de Tabarla has been a municipal nature area since 2007 and covers 68.42 hectares. Its wildlife includes mountain goats, Iberian hares, foxes, wild boar, genets and red squirrels, as well as numerous amphibians, reptiles and birds. A recreational area and a section with paelleros provide opportunities for picnics in natural surroundings; check local conditions before travelling. Free camping is not permitted in Tabarla.

The Cueva de las Palomas features a rugged landscape with pools and cascades that form during periods of heavy rainfall. Its main attraction is a waterfall approximately 20 metres high, with its strongest flow after rainfall. Part of the trail near the Cueva runs parallel to the Juanes River and passes geomorphological formations created by water erosion. The Ruta del Agua del río Juanes, also known as Río Chico, begins upstream in the municipality of Yátova. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

The Sendero PRV-115 starts in the town centre. It is classified as moderate and requires neither special equipment nor specific training. Along the route, dry farming, carob, olive and almond trees, scrubland and pine forests alternate. Dry-stone walls support the trail surface on the mountainside. For comparison, the trail in the Paraje Natural Municipal de Tabarla is described as easy to walk and is 9.1 kilometres long. This information can help you assess the different demands of the two trails.

The Ruta de los Cucos is an accessible circular trail that connects several dry-stone structures. These historic buildings provided shelter for shepherds, charcoal burners and farmers. Another route leads from the municipality of Yátova to Motrotón, one of the area’s most prominent mountains. Conditions and trail markers on this route may change; check the latest information before setting out.

Buildings and history

The Iglesia Parroquial de los Santos Reyes is classified as a Bien de Relevancia Local. The Baroque building dates from the 17th century and was remodelled in the 18th century. The bell tower was built in Yátova’s former mosque. Calle del Arco is considered the town’s only surviving medieval architectural feature; all urban routes pass through this street.

El Pozo de la Nieve dates from the 17th century. The building is an ice house that was once used to preserve food, and is one of the few surviving buildings of this type in a town centre. Yátova is therefore home to different forms of heritage side by side: religious architecture, a medieval feature in the streetscape and a building once used for storage.

Pico de los Ajos is a fortified Iberian settlement in the Sierra Martés and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2016. The archaeological site has been partially consolidated and marked with signs; visitor access has been available since 2020. From the car park at the Refugio de montaña del Manquillo, a trail described as easy to walk leads there along the GR-7. Guided tours of Pico de los Ajos have also been organised since 2020, with advance reservations. Confirm your reservation and local access conditions before visiting.

Plan your visit and travel dates

Visits to the Colección Museográfica take place during library opening hours or by contacting the Ayuntamiento de Yátova in advance. Confirm your visit arrangements before arriving. If you would like to combine your stay with an event, Yátova’s Feria de Turismo, Artesanía y Gastronomía takes place on the first weekend of June; the exact dates may vary from year to year. Associations and traders from Yátova gather for the event in Parque de San Vicente. Check the dates for your travel year before planning your trip.
