Mörrum: Fishing, Hiking Trails and Cultural History
Accommodation in Mörrum
Discover Mörrum through its sport fishing, trails along the Mörrumsån and traces of its cultural history. This offers different ways to plan your trip: a visit focused on fishing traditions, a hiking stage or a look at the history of the town and its river landscape.
Sport Fishing and Laxens Hus
Since spring 1941, Mörrums Kronolaxfiske has operated as an exclusively sport fishing area. You need a personal fishing permit to fish in the Mörrumsån. Permits are available from Mörrums Kronolaxfiske at Laxens Hus or online; check the current fishing rules before your trip.
Laxens Hus at Kungsforsen in the centre of Mörrum is the hub for sport fishing on the river. Mörrums Kronolaxfiske offers fishing equipment rental and guided fishing trips there. Check in advance whether these services are currently available.
The exhibition at Laxens Hus traces the life of the salmon from the sea to the river. It also covers royal fishing in the Mörrumsån, which began in the early 13th century, and the start of recreational fishing in 1941 under the then fishery manager, Gunnar Johansson. The aquarium features most of the species found in the Mörrumsån.
Hiking the Laxaleden
The Laxaleden follows the Mörrumsån through forest, farmland and coastal landscapes and is more than 30 kilometres long in total. Starting from Mörrums Kronolaxfiske, you can choose shorter or longer stages. This lets you tailor the hike to different timeframes without committing to a particular distance.
In the Mörrumsåns nedre dalgång nature reserve, the Laxaleden follows the river between Mörrum and Svängsta, through the entire length of the reserve. There are also several other trails. The stretch between Svängsta and Mörrum is about 12 kilometres long and works well as a point-to-point hike, with bus and train connections that can be combined. Some sections are narrow, rocky and steep. Check current trail conditions, maps and timetables before setting out.
A shorter option is the Mörrums Kulturslinga, which is about 2 kilometres long. It starts at Laxens Hus and takes you through Mörrum’s history, fishing traditions and biological diversity. If you’re planning the walk, check the linked map before setting out.
Nature and Cultural History
Oak, beech and pine forests dominate the Mörrumsåns nedre dalgång nature reserve. The area is home to numerous fungi, lichens and mosses found only in forests with high natural value and long-established deciduous or pine woodland. You can therefore explore the landscape not only through its river and trails, but also through its distinctive forest habitats.
The area also contains traces and remains of its cultural history, including house foundations, stone walls, old roads and stone bridges, as well as structures associated with fixed fishing, timber rafting, mills, sawmills and salmon farming. Mörrum Church reflects another historical period: its oldest parts date from the Middle Ages. During an extensive renovation and expansion from 1844 to 1847, the church acquired its neoclassical design.
Events also celebrate local fishing traditions. Laxfesten, held on 11 May, features a market, a fair and net pulling; Mörrums kulturförening describes it as its biggest event. Check the latest event information before your trip.
