Svängsta combines riverside scenery, trails and a rich industrial history. The Mörrumsån flows through the town and is associated with both walking and cycling trails and the history of watchmaking. If you are looking for a hotel in Svängsta, you can plan your stay around different interests: for example, by making time for a longer hiking route, museums, or trails and bodies of water in the town.
Riverside scenery and trails around Svängsta
The Mörrumsåns nedre dalgång Nature Reserve stretches from Mörrum in the south to Svängsta in the north. The Laxaleden trail runs along the Mörrumsån between the two towns and passes through Svängsta. The route is just over 30 kilometres long in total. This overall length gives you an idea of the distance if you would like to include a longer route in your plans.
A cycling and walking trail also runs along the Mörrumsån. In the centre, Svängstaparken lies right by the river; the Sydostleden runs through the park. This means there are different trail connections: the Laxaleden runs between Mörrum and Svängsta, while the Sydostleden passes through the centrally located park. There are illuminated exercise loops around Abborrsjön. The Svängsta-Öjavad exercise trail starts at Skogsfalkens stuga in Öjavad. These named places and routes can help you distinguish between different trail destinations during your stay.
Watchmaking and industrial history
The Halda pocket watch factory was founded in Svängsta in 1887. Another important foundation followed in 1921, when Carl August Borgström established AB Urfabriken by the Mörrumsån in Svängsta. The company initially manufactured pocket watches, telephone timers and taximeters. The two founding years provide a timeframe for the local history of watchmaking, without conflating the different companies.
The old factory was eventually converted into the ABU Museum, one of Sweden’s most important industrial museums. At the Abu-museet, visitors can see how the coveted pocket watches were made and experience machinery from the late 19th century. The museum visit thus focuses both on watchmaking and on historical technology. If you are interested in industrial history, this look at products and machinery offers a tangible way to explore the development of the local factory history.
School history and bodies of water
The Möllegårdens skolmuseum offers a different perspective. It includes a classroom, a teacher’s residence and an exhibition room with school materials from different periods. The museum also features an exhibition about all the schools in the municipality. It is housed in the oldest and best-preserved school building in Karlshamn Municipality. The rooms and exhibits shift the focus from industry to teaching and the municipal school system. The two museum themes therefore have different emphases: the history of factories and their products on the one hand, and schools and education on the other.
Hundsjön is a municipal swimming lake in the middle of Svängsta. If you are planning a visit for swimming, check the latest access information in advance. Together with the exercise loops around Abborrsjön, the lake adds to the choice of water-based and active ways to spend time in town.
