Nättraby: Hiking Trails, River and Culture
Accommodation in Nättraby
For a stay in Nättraby, you can choose from several specific highlights: hiking trails through varied landscapes, the Nättrabyån, a medieval church and a studio glass workshop. This makes it easy to plan your trip around whether you want to spend most of your time on foot, include the river landscape or explore architecture and glassmaking culture.
Hiking trails with different highlights
Skärvaleden is a 5 km circular hike through beaches, meadows, pastures, groves, marshes and historic sites. The variety of landscapes makes the natural environment the main focus of the route, while the historic sites add to this appeal. The Skärvaleden & Nättrabyleden circular hike passes Nättraby kyrka and follows the Nättrabyån. You can therefore distinguish between the trails by their highlights: Skärvaleden focuses on distance and landscape variety, while Skärvaleden & Nättrabyleden takes in the church and river. You can travel to Nättraby by bicycle or bus to access Skärvaleden through the Skärva Nature Reserve. As route conditions may vary seasonally, check the latest information before planning your trip.
Nättraby kyrka: Romanesque and medieval history
Nättraby kyrka was built in the 12th century and is one of the few surviving medieval churches in Blekinge. It is a Romanesque apse church made of plastered granite and grey stone; the nave, chancel and apse have been preserved. The term “apse church” highlights the apse as an architectural feature, while the details about the nave and chancel add to the description of the church’s layout. For culturally minded travellers, the church brings together its medieval history with a clearly identifiable architectural form and specific materials. Its regional significance stems from more than its age: its status as one of the few surviving churches of this kind in Blekinge also makes it a distinctive subject of cultural history.
River cruises and outdoor activities
The M/S Axel travels along the Nättrabyån to Nättraby. Heading upstream, the boat trip passes through the river’s idyllic waters beneath lush green foliage. The Nättrabyån is therefore part of both a hiking route and an experience from the water. If you plan a trip, check the latest schedule. A municipal report dated 10 November 2025 located the outdoor gym in the meadow beside the Nättrabyån, opposite the village shop; the report also listed nine different pieces of equipment.
Studio glass in a converted water tower
Malin Mena has run her studio glass workshop in a converted water tower dating from the 1950s since 2006. The workshop is in Nättraby, just outside Karlskrona in Blekinge. Glass art offers a different cultural focus from the medieval church: here, a studio business operating since 2006 is housed in a former water tower. If you plan to visit, check in advance what visiting options are available, as arrangements may change.
