Foskros: Nature along the Storån and trails in the mountains
Accommodation in Foskros
If you are considering Foskros as a travel destination, its river, mountains and trails provide practical starting points for planning. When looking for a hotel in Foskros, your planned activities are a helpful place to start: the area offers hiking and cross-country skiing, as well as a quota-controlled fly-fishing area on the Storån. The different destinations have different access routes—for example, the walk to the boundary of Töfsingdalen National Park or the hike to the fishing area.
River, mountains and lichens
Foskros Fjällby is located on the Storån (Österdalälven) and borders the Långfjället Nature Reserve to the west. The Långfjället Nature Reserve, with excellent ski trails and hiking paths, is also close to Foskros Fjällby. Eländesgraven offers a different natural attraction: the reserve is a stream valley with a main ravine and a side ravine. Its forests and rocks provide a habitat for several oceanic lichens. Eländesgraven is not far from the road that passes Foskros. This means your plans can take in the river and mountains, as well as a valley shaped by its two ravines.
Trails and getting there
From Ängessildret, it is an eight-kilometre walk to the boundary of Töfsingdalen National Park. The car park at Ängessildret is accessible from Foskros via a gravel road. This provides a clearly identified starting point for a hike. In winter, the road from Foskros to the car park is only cleared of snow as far as Hällsjön; road conditions can vary seasonally. There is no marked winter trail from the Ängessildret entrance to the national park. If you are planning to drive there in winter, check the current road conditions in advance.
An on-demand bus service is another travel option: Dalatrafik operates a route 782 bus from Idre on certain days of the week in the Foskros flex area. Operating days and details may change, so check the current timetable before travelling. Another tour route is Foskros–Södra Kungsleden, a 24.8-kilometre snowmobile route. Route information may be updated.
Fly fishing on the Storån
Only fly fishing is permitted on the Storån. A maximum of 20 anglers per day are allowed in the quota-controlled area on the Storån, and a special fishing permit is also required. From Foskros, you can reach the fishing area via Hällsjön and Siljans Hut. This is followed by a hike of approximately 12 kilometres. The approximate distance and the access routes mentioned are important when planning; road conditions and access can vary seasonally. Therefore, check the latest visitor information about the fishing permit and access before your trip.
Cross-country skiing and a glimpse into village history
Foskros has numerous cross-country ski trails through the forest and across the mountains. This offers a different way to plan winter activities in the area than a hike to the national park or fishing area: here, the focus is on the trail network, while the other outings mentioned involve covering a specific distance on foot.
There is also a specific occasion for a cultural insight. During Foskrosdagen 2026, the school serves as a meeting place where visitors can experience what a school looked like and how it operated nearly 100 years ago. The event programme may change. If this item is important to your trip, check the latest information about Foskrosdagen.
