Fryksås: Hiking Trails, Winter Activities and Fäbod Culture
Accommodation in Fryksås
Fryksås combines the history of its Fäbod with hiking and winter activities. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you’re looking for a short hike, considering a multi-hour section of the Siljansleden, or planning winter activities. Kulning, crafts and gatherings with a musical focus are also part of the village’s cultural offerings. These different highlights can help you tailor your search for a hotel in Fryksås to the activities that interest you most.
Fäbod History and Culture
The Fryksås Fäbod has some old buildings whose origins date back to the 16th century. In the past, several villages, including villages in Mora, used Fryksås as a summer Fäbod. This historic use and the partly old buildings give the Fäbod its own cultural context, distinct from today’s hiking and winter activities.
Kulning is still practised in Fryksås today, usually at the request of tourists. Smidgården holds kulning courses. The Dalarnas spelmansförbund also organises various gatherings in Fryksås. If you’d like to attend one, check the specific dates in advance.
Hiking: A Short Route or a Multi-Hour Section?
The Siljansleden passes through Fryksås and is 34 Swedish miles, or 340 kilometres, long in total. For a hike with a clearly defined distance, there’s Fryksås t/r: this four-kilometre hike passes the Fryksås Fäbod. It offers a different guide than the section of the Siljansleden between Fryksås and Orsa, for which an approximate duration and difficulty rating are provided.
Allow approximately five to six hours for this section between Fryksås and Orsa. It is rated easy to moderate; duration, terrain and conditions depend on the season and hiking conditions. The approximate time is therefore a planning guide, not an exact schedule. Smidgården also offers a guided hiking experience through forests, meadows and Fäbod surroundings. The offering is available in 2026; check dates and availability before your trip.
Winter Trails and Activities
The Skogsrundan till Fryksås winter hike is about five kilometres long and follows a relatively flat skoterspår, or snowmobile track. A horse-drawn sleigh ride takes you through snow-covered forests to Fryksås. The two options offer different experiences: hiking along a described winter route, or travelling through the snowy forest.
During the cross-country skiing season, you can reach Smidgården on cross-country skis via the Fryksås t/r route. This lets you choose winter activities based on your preferred way of getting around: winter hiking, a horse-drawn sleigh ride or cross-country skiing. Seasonal conditions and the dates of each activity are relevant planning considerations when choosing your travel dates.
Crafts, Food and Visitor Information
Fryksås Hantverksbod is located at the entrance to Fryksås Hotell. There, 14 to 18 craftspeople sell their creations; the number of participants may vary. Smidgården Restaurang & Café serves waffles and makes use of local forest produce. As the menu may change, it’s worth checking the current offering before your visit.
Fryksås Hotell & Gestgifveri serves as an InfoPoint in Fryksås. When planning your trip, you can consider both practical visitor information and different interests: hiking a route with a specific distance, a longer section with an approximate walking time, winter activities and cultural offerings. If you’re looking for a hotel in Fryksås, you can use these distinctions to plan your stay around the activities that matter to your trip.
