During a stay in Sandviken, Lake Flosjön, the Fäbod settlement and the Romboleden shape the character of the destination. Sandviken is a Fäbod settlement—a summer-pasture settlement—by the lake and lies on the Romboleden stage between Dala-Floda and Ljusbodarna. This combination draws attention both to the waterside landscape and to a historically rooted form of settlement. If you would like to consider the pilgrimage route and Fäbod culture together on your trip, Sandviken offers a clear geographical connection between them.

Sandviken on the Romboleden

The Romboleden stage from Dala-Floda to Ljusbodarna is 14.5 kilometres long and passes the Fäbod Sandviken on Lake Flosjön. It is part of Sweden’s longest pilgrimage route, whose origins date back to the 11th century. From Dala-Floda, the route follows an old Fäbod trail to Sandviken. This brings a local settlement and the long history of the pilgrimage route together along this particular section.

Fäbod, shoreline and open landscape

The original buildings of the Fäbod are close to the shore of Lake Flosjön, where they are clustered together. The buildings thus form a cohesive group by the lake. Sandviken’s open landscape consists mainly of fields and meadows used to grow animal fodder, complemented by a few groups of deciduous trees. This combination of original buildings, agricultural land and groups of trees gives the place a rural character. If you are interested in Fäbod culture, the settlement’s lakeside layout is therefore as relevant as its name.

Trails by Lake Flosjön and the Sångån

The Romboleden stage also has an alternative route along a gravel road, which follows Lake Flosjön to Sandviken. From Sandviken, the route continues north towards Lake Sången and runs partly alongside the Sångån river. These are different landmarks along the route: the gravel-road alternative by Lake Flosjön to the Fäbod, and the northbound route towards Sången. Historical activities along the Sångån included dams, mills and log driving. The river’s former use is therefore also part of the cultural history connected with the route.

Bathing spot and steamboat excursion

There is a bathing spot with a sandy beach on Lake Flosjön, by the Fäbod Sandviken. The bathing spot is not run by the municipality. This offers another perspective on the place alongside the pilgrimage route: the lake is not only part of the route’s landscape, but is also home to a specific bathing spot. When choosing your destination, you can weigh the route and time by the water as different interests.

Excursions on the steamboat S/S Ångslupen Agnes visit the Fäbod Sandviken. A break is planned there for guests to enjoy their own Fika, a Swedish coffee break. Telephone enquiries and bookings are available for a maximum of 15 people. If you are planning an excursion like this, confirm the dates before your trip. This lets you include the steamboat trip in your travel plans as a separate option alongside the Romboleden stage and the bathing spot.
