Discover Hedemora: Trails, Nature and History
Accommodation in Hedemora
Explore Hedemora through its town history, nature and trails, each offering a different focus. From a city walk through older districts to a long pilgrimage route and historic destinations in the surrounding area, there are several ways to plan your trip.
Trails and Nature Around Hedemora
The Kulturpromenaden city walk leads through Hedemora’s oldest districts and to buildings and places of cultural and historical interest. The route therefore includes both older districts and individual historic destinations.
The Hedemora Pilgrimsleden trail passes through scenic countryside and offers opportunities for prayer, quiet and reflection. It is about 130 kilometres long, with stages of approximately 15 to 22 kilometres. It also passes every church in the parish. The distance figures refer to different scales: one is for the entire route, the other for its stages.
Stadssjön is a municipal nature reserve in the parts of the Hovran area close to town. A wooden boardwalk about 300 metres long runs through the reserve. The route can be used on foot, for running, with a wheelchair, pushchair or rollator. This is a clearly defined section of trail, with specific types of use explicitly mentioned.
Building History and Historic Sites
The church is the only surviving building from the medieval town of Hedemora. It was built in the late 13th or early 14th century. The Teaterladan provides another point of reference: a Hedemora wholesaler built it in the 1820s. The church and the Teaterladan thus represent two different periods of construction, from the late Middle Ages to the 1820s.
Hedemora Gammelgård is located by Lake Hönsan. It is one of Sweden’s oldest historic farm complexes, adding a historic farmstead by the lake to the picture of the area’s building history.
Trails and Destinations in the Surrounding Area
Just outside Hedemora, Husbyringen is a 60-kilometre nature and cultural trail for hiking and cycling. Numerous visitor attractions lie along the route. Compared with the approximately 130-kilometre Hedemora Pilgrimsleden, Husbyringen is shorter; hiking and cycling are the activities mentioned for it. The two trails can therefore be distinguished by their length and the uses described. The Pilgrimsleden passes every church in the parish and offers opportunities for prayer, quiet and reflection; Husbyringen, by contrast, is a nature and cultural trail for hiking and cycling.
Northeast of Hedemora, in the surrounding area, lies Stjärnsund, a historic industrial site associated with Christopher Polhem’s enterprise from the 18th century. This regional connection complements Hedemora’s historic buildings with another cultural and historical focus: the industrial history of the surrounding area.
