The topics range from medieval architectural history to walking and cycling routes. This makes it easy to plan your stay around the interests that matter to you.

Historic Buildings in Falkenberg

S:t Laurentii Church is the oldest building in Falkenberg. It was built around 1300 and is also the city’s only surviving medieval building. This single building therefore represents two important milestones in the local history of architecture.

The defensive fortress Borgen Falkenberg also reflects medieval power relations: it was built towards the end of the 13th century as an outpost of Danish royal power. The castle ruins are at the eastern end of Tullbron. The bridge itself was built between 1756 and 1761 and has been protected as a listed building since 1984.

A later example of sacred architecture is Falkenberg Church. The Neo-Gothic church was designed by Adrian C. Peterson and inaugurated on 14 October 1892. Together with S:t Laurentii Church, it illustrates the different periods in which the churches in Falkenberg were built.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

Rian hosts temporary exhibitions and manages cultural history collections and environments. Falkenbergs Hembygdsmuseum focuses on the city’s history from antiquity to the early 20th century. The two attractions therefore have different areas of focus: changing exhibitions at Rian and a long historical period at Hembygdsmuseum.

The Hembygdsmuseum building is also part of the visitor experience: it is housed in a well-preserved Old Town building and has a museum garden. If you are interested in the cityscape, the museum’s historical story is complemented by its location in a building in the Old Town.

Walking and Cycling Routes along the Ätran

There are several options for routes along the Ätran. Laxpromenaden is a walking and cycling route along the river that passes through scenic surroundings. The Doktorspromenaden walking trail also follows the Ätran, is two kilometres long and was completed in 1861. When planning, you can choose between a route designed for cycling as well as walking and a walking trail with a specific stated length.

Another route connects central Falkenberg with Skrea Beach: Strandpromenaden links the two destinations on foot in about half an hour. This gives you a different planning reference from the stated length of Doktorspromenaden: here, the focus is on the approximate walking time between the city centre and the beach.

Coastal Landscape and Kattegattleden

The Grimsholmen Nature Reserve is located near Falkenberg. Its landscape includes open coastal heath, botanically interesting coastal meadows, areas strewn with boulders and small sandy beaches suitable for swimming. Kattegattleden passes by the nature reserve and its car park; the car park is served by the “Grimsholmen Broberg” bus stop. If you are planning to take the bus, check the timetable before setting off.

Kattegattleden is a national cycle route that runs through all of Halland; the section in Falkenberg is varied. The route is 39 miles long in total between Gothenburg and Helsingborg and runs mostly close to the coast and free of cars. These details apply to the route as a whole and are distinct from the specific reference point at Grimsholmen: there, the nature reserve, car park and bus stop serving it are the relevant landmarks.
