Kungsbacka combines a historic townscape with contemporary art, live performances and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. The town centre is characterised by low wooden houses, enclosed city blocks and courtyards. Kungsbackaån and Söderån are also part of the town’s history: the area where the medieval trading centre was relocated lies between the rivers.

Townscape and history

Towards the end of the Viking Age and in the early Middle Ages, a trading centre developed on Kungsbackaån. Later, the medieval trading centre was relocated to the area of today’s town centre between Kungsbackaån and Söderån. This sequence of events gives the river a special role in Kungsbacka’s history: it is associated with both the early trading centre and the surroundings of the later town centre.

Röda Stugan is Kungsbacka’s oldest building and one of two buildings that show what the town looked like before the fire of 1846. Another architectural feature can be found at Kungsbacka torg: Sparbankshuset has a wooden façade that imitates the more understated architecture of stone buildings. Together with the low wooden houses and enclosed blocks, these details shape the look of the town centre.

A market is held in the marketplace year-round on the first non-working Thursday of each month. As the town’s information about its schedule was last checked on 2 September 2026, it is advisable to check the date again before your trip.

Art, culture and live performances

Kungsbacka konsthall presents exhibitions focusing on contemporary art. Every month, it also displays one work from the Kungsbacka Municipality art collection; the individual work may change. Another way to combine art with a walk is the Digital konstrunda, a self-guided art walk through the town centre. The works on display there may also change.

Kungsbacka offers a range of venues for events. Kungsbacka Teater is the town’s touring venue for concerts, dance and theatre performances, as well as stand-up. The theatre is a few minutes’ walk from Kungsbacka Resecentrum. Alléteatern is an independent theatre in Kungsbacka, run on a voluntary basis by Kulturföreningen Alléteatern. The performances vary, so if you’re planning a theatre visit, check the current programme.

Getting around and green spaces

Badhusparken is a green oasis in the centre, between the town centre and the travel centre. It was established as a green meeting place when the railway arrived in Kungsbacka. For a different view of the town, visit the wooden lookout at the top of the hill in Björkris: you can see across Kungsbacka, and the Kungsbackafjord may also be visible.

Kungsbacka has many walking and cycling paths where you can explore the town by bike. You can fish in KungsbackaĂĄn right in the middle of town; the river contains trout and salmon. If fishing is part of your travel plans, check the applicable rules and season in advance.

Västtrafik commuter trains between Gothenburg and Kungsbacka run several times an hour; the journey takes 25 minutes.
