Bräcke offers nature experiences that vary from hiking trails and rivers to activities on the water or ice. This is evident both in the extensive Helvetesbrännan protected area and along individual trails by Forsaån and Gimån. This gives you different options when planning your trip: hiking, fishing or activities at Revsundssjön.

Protected Area and Hiking Trails

Helvetesbrännan covers 3,385 hectares and is a nature reserve as well as a Natura 2000 site. Almost 1,000 hectares are in Jämtlands län; the protected area also extends into Bräcke Municipality. There are about 20 kilometres of hiking trails in the area, five overnight cabins and several wind shelters. Helvetesbrännan thus combines an extensive trail network with various cabins for hikes and overnight stays.

The approximately 7-kilometre-long Forsaleden can be hiked from either end. It follows Forsaån through partly rocky terrain and crosses bridges and wooden boardwalks. There are waterfalls, rapids and dams along the trail. The Kunskapsleden runs for about 6 kilometres through the forest landscape by Gimån. Information boards introduce the area’s natural and cultural heritage; several wind shelters are also located along the trail.

On the approximately 5-kilometre-long Kroktjärnsleden, you reach Kroktjärn, with a rest area and wind shelter. Near the lake is a viewpoint overlooking the treetops. The Kullaleden, in turn, leads to a viewpoint with wide-ranging views over Gimdalen and its surroundings. Two sections of the S:t Olavsleden also pass through Bräcke Municipality.

Rivers, Fishing and Activities on the Water

Gimån is an unregulated forest river, particularly well known for grayling fishing. The northern section is especially interesting for trout: in early summer in particular, it is considered one of Jämtland’s best trout fishing waters. The two fishing recommendations therefore differ by fish species and river section; the seasonal distinction applies specifically to trout in the northern part of the river.

At Revsundssjön, you can go canoeing and take boat trips, as well as cross-country ski on the ice and ice fish. This means there are activities on both open water and ice. If you enjoy planning a variety of activities, you can take this range into account when arranging your days.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

Norrtåg stops at four places in the municipality: Pilgrimstad, Gällö, Stavre and Bräcke. Bus route 127 runs between Bräcke and Östersund; other routes connect additional places within the municipality. Check the timetable for your travel date to find specific departure times.

When planning your hotel stay, your preferred activities may help you decide: hiking, grayling fishing on Gimån, or water and winter activities at Revsundssjön each offer a different focus for your stay.
