Funäsdalen between mountain landscapes and culture
Accommodation in Funäsdalen
Funäsdalen lies at the foot of Funäsdalsberget. During your stay, you can explore both the mountain landscape and the area's cultural history. Options range from short walks to full-day excursions deep into the mountains; the museum and cultural sites offer further points of interest. When looking for a hotel in Funäsdalen, you can first decide whether mountain activities or regional history should shape your stay.
Mountain Landscapes and Local History
From Funäsdalen, there are sweeping views of the Skarvarna. Some of the area's older character has been preserved in the town centre. The buildings have their roots in the mountain farming culture; the landscape, nature, agriculture and self-sufficiency influenced their development. This development can be understood as an interplay between the landscape and farming life.
Fornminnesparken showcases the historic building culture of western Härjedalen. The Sámi cultural park Lopme Laante explores the Sámi people, their way of life and livelihoods, and shares knowledge about Sámi culture and its diversity. These offer different cultural perspectives side by side: regional architectural history and Sámi culture.
Härjedalens fjällmuseum is open seasonally from 15 June to 10 October. If the museum is a fixed part of your itinerary, plan your visit within this season and check the opening hours in advance. The Funäsgondolen return ticket also serves as an admission ticket to Lopme Laante.
Trails, Mountains and Water
Hiking options range from short walks to full-day excursions that lead deep into the mountains. Långa Bergsturen runs along the ridge of Funäsdalsberget and down to Funäsdalen. This gives you two different points of reference: the duration of a hike and the route of a named trail. For mountain biking, choose between winding flow trails, technical trails and scenic gravel roads. When choosing, you can consider two features: the duration for hikes and the type of route for mountain biking.
Funäsdalsberget has a nine-hole disc golf course that starts at Röstbergsliften and climbs uphill. Arctic char and trout are among the fish found in the mountain lakes around Funäsdalen.
You can paddle a kayak, canoe or SUP and experience the mountain landscape from the water.
The lake in the centre of Funäsdalen has jetties and swimming spots.
Cross-Country Skiing and Getting There
Funäsdalen offers 300 kilometres of interconnected cross-country ski trails. The Härjedalingen bus connects Stockholm, Uppsala and Gävle with Funäsdalen six days a week; check the connection before your trip. The Funäsgondolen takes visitors from the centre of Funäsdalen to the summit of Funäsdalsberget, 957 metres above sea level. The bus therefore connects the named cities with the town, while the gondola connects the town centre with the summit: these are different journeys for getting there and travelling up the mountain.
