Laxviken on Lake Hotagen
Accommodation in Laxviken
Laxviken is a small farming village on the northeastern shore of Lake Hotagen. When looking for a hotel, it helps to first consider which features of a destination matter to you: bodies of water, wetlands, orchids or cultural history. Several specific themes are central to Laxviken. You can decide whether the area’s natural and landscape features or the history of transhumance farming interest you more.
Lake and river in Laxviken
Hotagensjön and Hotagssjön are different lakes. Laxviken lies on the northeastern shore of Hotagensjön. Below Hotagssjön is Hotagsströmmen, a section of the Hårkan River in Laxviken. Distinguishing between the similar-sounding names helps avoid confusing the lakeshore with the named stretch of river. The village’s connection to Hotagensjön and the course of the Hårkan River therefore refer to different bodies of water.
Wetlands and orchids
The Storsundet Laxviken Natura 2000 site is located near Laxviken and covers just under 18 hectares. It consists mostly of wetlands, with a smaller area of dry land. This describes both the approximate size and the composition of the site. Viktorbuan lies north of the village, along the forest road toward Lillvattnet. It is home to a species-rich orchid marsh. About 200 metres along the road toward Forsåsen, there is a nature trail where orchids grow. The plants’ presence may vary with the season. If orchids are a deciding factor for you, check trail and flowering conditions locally.
The area’s cultural history
Laxviken is classified as an area of cultural and historical value. The Laxvikens Skogs- och flottarmuseum was inaugurated in 1996. An account of transhumance farming, recorded in 1962, reports that while staying in the summer dairy huts, female herders knitted socks for their farmers. This adds a specific historical episode from transhumance farming to the landscape. The two dates refer to different things: 1996 to the museum’s inauguration, and 1962 to the recorded account.
Swimming area, boat and fishing
There is a swimming area in Hotagssjön at Sågbacken, about two kilometres from Laxviken. Facilities and access conditions can change; check local conditions before visiting. A boat for Lake Hotagen can be rented at Gammalålvikstjärn. As rental arrangements can change, it is best to ask in advance about availability for your dates. According to the fishing regulations checked on 2 September 2026, fishing with hand-held equipment was permitted in the waters of Laxvikens FVO. The exceptions were Fjösviken and the current on the western side around the island. Fishing regulations can change; check the current rules before fishing.
