Ragunda: Geopark, Rivers and Culture
Accommodation in Ragunda
Ragunda showcases nature and culture in many different ways: the Indalsälven Geopark focuses on geological traces, while the Ammerån features river landscapes. Churches, wooden houses and the Thailändska Paviljongen add their own cultural highlights. When planning your trip, it’s worth deciding first between hiking, winter activities and culture. The season also matters: the winter course in Hammarstrand is weather-dependent, and guided tours at the pavilion are offered seasonally.
Geopark and River Landscapes
The Indalsälven Geopark is located in Ragunda Municipality and was recognized as a Swedish geopark by the SGU in 2022. Geological features that can be experienced there include unique varved clay, magma chambers, glacial potholes, large boulders and traces of ice ages. The different formations give the landscape its geological character. The geopark can be visited year-round; snow may make access more difficult in winter. Keep this difference in mind when choosing your travel dates.
The Ammerån is a completely unregulated river that flows from the Hotagsfjällen mountains. The Ammerån Nature Reserve offers both foaming rapids and calm waters, as well as opportunities for fishing. This means that fast-moving water and quieter stretches sit alongside a specific activity that you can include in your day’s plans.
Another natural attraction is the Kvarnån Utanede area. It is home to rare forests shaped by calcareous sand and gravel. The Indalsälven and earlier meltwater rivers transported this material. So the focus here is not only on the forest itself, but also on the underlying ground that explains its distinctive character.
Hiking Trails and Winter Activities
The “Borgsjön runt” hiking trail passes several wetlands. In Ragundadalen, the hiking trails are equipped with a signposting system and clear markings; check the signs locally before setting off. One trail crosses the ridge of Kullstaberget and offers beautiful views. In Hammarstrand, the “Hollywoodskylt” is also a notable landmark.
For a winter visit, Hammarstrand’s Naturbanan offers a different kind of activity: the course is 1,000 metres long and intended for snow racers and alpine sledding. It operates seasonally and is also weather-dependent. Before you travel, check whether conditions suit your plans. This specific winter activity is quite different from the hiking trails that pass wetlands or cross a mountain ridge.
Church Architecture and Culture
Ragunda gamla kyrka is a well-preserved Gothic stone church dating from the first decade of the 16th century. One distinctive architectural detail is its chancel screen: only one other survives in Sweden, at Husaby kyrka. This makes the chancel screen a defining feature of the church, alongside its architecture and age.
Skyttmon is home to around ten well-preserved large wooden houses with richly decorated plank architecture, known as “träslott.” The Thailändska Paviljongen, the only royal Thai pavilion outside Thailand, stands in Utanede. The cultural building displays objects and photographs relating to the pavilion’s origins, King Chulalongkorn and Thai culture. Access to the cultural building is currently limited to guided tours booked in advance. During the seasonal opening period, guided tours of the pavilion grounds are also offered, covering King Chulalongkorn and the memorial building. Check the tour dates before your trip.
Getting There and Planning Your Trip
The Indalsälven Geopark can be reached by car or bus from towns in the region; rail and air connections run via Sundsvall or Östersund. As timetables and transport services change, check the connections that suit your travel dates. When looking for a hotel in Ragunda, let your planned activities guide your choice: geology and river landscapes, hiking, winter sledding or culture. First decide which priorities matter for your trip, then plan around seasonal guided tours and weather-dependent activities.
