Hällefors: Moorland, hiking trails and mining history
Accommodation in Hällefors
Hällefors offers different perspectives on nature and culture: moorland, hiking trails and stretches of river sit alongside reminders of silver mining and historic townscapes. The seasons also bring their own highlights—from birdwatching in spring to winter activities at Hurtigtorpet.
Moorland, meadows and river landscapes
Parts of the Knuthöjdsmossen Nature Reserve are part of the European Union’s Natura 2000 network and bear the designation SE0240037. A boardwalk runs through the moor in the northern part. The first approximately 400 metres are particularly wide to accommodate strollers and wheelchairs. Parts of the trail are subject to seasonal restrictions to protect nesting birds; check the nature reserve’s boundaries and visitor rules before your visit. Knuthöjdsmossen is a breeding area for red-necked grebes. April and May offer the best chances of seeing the birds, but a sighting is not guaranteed.
Björskogsnäs offers a different landscape: its old cultural landscape, with its rich flora, has been shaped by centuries of mowing and grazing. The lady’s slipper orchid attracts many visitors each year; its usual flowering period peaks in early June. A 1.3-kilometre circular trail runs through the nature reserve. A one-kilometre footpath leads from the car park to the reserve. Visitors should stay on the marked path while the meadow has not yet been mown.
At the Nittälven, rapids, waterfalls and calmer stretches of water alternate. The river is unregulated, and conditions change with the season and weather. April and May are often particularly favourable for paddling: spring flooding naturally raises the water level. Check the current flow and hazards on the water before setting out.
Hiking trails and mining history
The 65-kilometre Silverleden hiking trail starts and ends at Hurtigtorpet in Hällefors. It passes through areas where silver mining was extensive in the 17th century. There are places along the trail to replenish water supplies; check locally before setting out to confirm that they are available. This makes Silverleden a very different option from the short circular trail in Björskogsnäs: the two routes differ considerably in length and in the planning required.
The Silvergruvorna also bring the mining history to life. The surviving remains date mainly from the period of silver mining in the 17th and 18th centuries. Silvergruvan was Sweden’s second-largest silver mine; only the Sala silver mine was larger. A marked trail through the cultural landscape leads to a viewpoint with a picnic table.
In summer, Hurtigtorpet has exercise trails ranging from 1.5 to 15 kilometres, an outdoor fitness area and an 18-hole disc golf course. In winter, the exercise trails become well-groomed ski tracks, and there is also a toboggan run. Snow conditions and operations depend on the weather, and facility availability may change. Check current conditions before your visit.
Grythyttan’s townscape and culture
Grythyttan has a well-preserved village and church centre. The Bergslagen style and wooden houses draw on architectural forms from the 18th and 19th centuries. Since the early 1970s, Grythyttan has been regarded as a centre that particularly preserves and develops local products and traditions.
The history of Måltidens Hus extends beyond Grythyttan: the building originally represented Sweden at the 1992 World’s Fair in Seville and was moved from Spain to Grythyttan in 1994. In Bredsjö, an open-air museum along an approximately two-kilometre historic trail tells the story of the Forest Finns and their way of life from the late 16th century onward. Information signs line the trail. Krokbornsparken, meanwhile, is Sweden’s oldest public park.
