Karlskoga offers a variety of ways to experience culture and enjoy outdoor activities. Alfred Nobel and the history of iron production sit alongside art, nature reserves and cycling routes. During your trip, you can choose from historical sites, walks and specific activity options.

Alfred Nobel and Karlskoga’s history

Alfred Nobel’s Björkborn is a museum dedicated to the inventor and benefactor Alfred Nobel and his last home in Sweden. Guided tours are offered at Björkborn Manor. The Bofors Industrial Museum is located near Alfred Nobel’s Björkborn in Karlskoga.

Karlskoga Konsthall also combines a visit with a special historical setting: it is located in the former detention area of the Karlskoga District Court, in Tingshusparken in the town centre. Alfred Nobel’s will was once legally validated there. The art gallery presents exhibitions of art, crafts and photography, featuring works by established and local artists.

In nearby Granbergsdal stands Granbergsdals hytta. The farmer Mårten Eskilsson founded it in 1642; today it is a protected historic building. The well-preserved site is a representative example of the ironworks that formed the backbone of iron production in Örebro County from the 17th century until the end of the 19th century.

Karlskoga kyrka has roots dating back to the late 16th century. The part known as Hertigkyrkan now serves as the sacristy; wall paintings from the time of construction have been preserved there. Nearby Gelleråsen Arena is steeped in motorsport history: built in 1949, the track was Sweden’s first permanent motorsport circuit. It is suitable for competitions, track days, testing, safety training and club gatherings.

Nature, trails and Möckeln

The Rävåsen Nature Reserve, a glacial ridge moraine, lies in the centre of Karlskoga. On Rävåskullen, a 106-step fitness staircase forms part of the green loop. Bullerdalen Nature Reserve offers a different landscape: Bullerdalsbäcken has cut into the ground there, forming a stream ravine 10 to 20 metres deep.

The Lunnedet visitor area and Knappfors slussar offer swimming spots and hiking trails. Lunnedet also has a walking trail about two kilometres long, adapted for accessibility for people with reduced mobility and marked in yellow. Näset Västra, a centrally located 100-metre-long beach, lies on the northern shore of Möckeln.

Getting around by bike or on foot

All cycling routes in Karlskoga start at Alfred Nobels torg and are marked with blue signs featuring a bicycle symbol. The Lunnedsrundan is 22 kilometres long. Outside the built-up area, the municipality maintains four more cycling routes through varied terrain and diverse natural surroundings. For planning, the distances and activities vary: for example, about two kilometres on the walking trail in Lunnedet or 22 kilometres on the Lunnedsrundan.

Activities for different interests

Boda Borg Karlskoga is an indoor adventure for groups, with 28 unique quests featuring different themes and environments. The challenges call for problem-solving and teamwork and involve varying levels of physical activity.

Fishing is also a year-round activity in Karlskoga. You can fish from the shore, from a boat or on the ice; local conditions and regulations may vary. Djerfstugan offers family-friendly winter activities, including cross-country skiing and a toboggan slope, as well as long-distance ice skating when ice conditions permit.
