Lindesberg: Mining History and Nature
Accommodation in Lindesberg
Lindesberg offers different ways to explore history and landscape: Stripa Gruvmiljö tells the story of mining and industry, while walking trails, nature reserves, and water-based activities offer other points of focus. You can plan your time around the subjects that interest you most.
Mining History and Historic Sites
Stripa Gruvmiljö is a cultural heritage site with preserved interiors and unique architecture. Stripa gruva has been a listed building since 2007. In summer, guided tours explore the history of Swedish mining and industry; check the dates and booking arrangements before your visit. The site is also home to Stripabryggeriet, a craft brewery with a restaurant. It opens only for special occasions.
Löa hytta also tells the story of iron production, but is open exclusively for booked guided tours. These explain the history of the site and the production of iron. The facilities include a blast furnace, a charcoal burner’s hut, bridges, a smithy, and a waterwheel. Iron production at this site dates back to the 15th century.
Siggebohyttans bergsmansgård offers a different historical perspective. Construction of the main building began around 1790; it has 14 rooms and three kitchens. Families can enjoy open green spaces, play equipment made from natural materials that can be borrowed, and views of Lake Usken. The details about the building give a clear sense of its size, while the green spaces and play equipment offer a different focus for a visit.
Town History and Art in the Centre
The walking tour through Lindesberg centre takes in nine historic sites, presented through images, texts, and an audio guide. Paint the City turns the streets in the centre into an open-air gallery with large murals. At Blombergska gården, a detailed 1:220 scale model shows what Lindesberg looked like in the past. The formats differ considerably: the walking tour divides the town’s history into individual stops, the model shows a miniature view of the town in the past, and Paint the City focuses on public art.
Nature Reserves and Trails by the Water
The Munkhyttan Nature Reserve focuses on protecting two butterflies that are endangered in Europe: Asknätfjärilen and Väddnätfjärilen. Tempelbacken offers a different natural setting. This ten-hectare nature reserve includes species-rich deciduous woodland and provides a habitat for many bird species.
The Lindessjön runt trail is seven kilometres long and can be extended to 8.5 kilometres. You can start and finish your walk in the centre of Lindesberg. At around eight kilometres long, the route connects the town, rural surroundings, nature reserves, and lakeshore. There are seven rest areas along the way where you can barbecue or have a picnic. The two stated route lengths offer different options; the description of the walk as around eight kilometres long also encompasses a variety of landscapes.
Quiz Walk, Kayaking, and Other Activities
The digital quiz walk X-rundan, also called Linderundan, follows the first section of the Lindessjön runt trail, from Lindesbergs Arena to Carlssons udde. It is 2.7 kilometres one way. The quiz content changes regularly. For an outing on the water, you can explore Lindesjön, Bottenån, and Råsvalen by kayak from the new kayak station at Loppholmen, next to the arena hall in Lindesberg. Kayak rental availability may change, so it is advisable to check in advance.
Boat trips on the MS Råsvalen depart from Kyrkbryggan below Lindesbergs stadshotell, travel along Bottenån to Lake Råsvalen, and return. Check departure times in advance. In Malingsbo-Kloten, you can hike, paddle, fish, cycle, and join guided tours; the first section of the Bergslagsleden also runs through the area. Malingsbo-Kloten is one of Sweden’s largest nature reserves. Check the activities on offer before your trip. Another sporting option is Lindesbergs Golfbana, an 18-hole golf course within walking distance of the town centre.
