Östmark: Cultural History and Water Experiences
Accommodation in Östmark
Östmark offers a variety of highlights for trip planning: a Finnish-influenced cultural landscape, historic mill technology, and activities related to lakes and rivers. If you are looking for a hotel in Östmark, you can first consider whether you are particularly interested in cultural history, nature, or a canoe trip. The specific places and conditions can help guide your decision.
Cultural Landscape and Historic Technology
Juhola finngård is located in Östmark and is Värmland’s first cultural reserve. The reserve preserves a culturally shaped landscape characteristic of Värmland’s Finnish-influenced settlement region. It covers 46 hectares, including a farmstead, farmland, meadows and forest. The focus is therefore not only on the farmstead, but also on the different elements of the preserved cultural landscape. Juhola represents a landscape-focused attraction, while Röjdåfors Mill offers a specific example of historic water technology.
The mill building in Röjdåfors is built of horizontal logs. Two waterwheels drive two pairs of millstones. The mill was built in 1859 and remained in operation until 1960. Today, it is an example of a once-common type of water-powered mill that has since become rare. Its construction, power source and period of operation offer different ways to explore the history of milling technology. Another historical connection is provided by copper mines in the immediate vicinity of the Törntorp local history museum. The mines were worked by Englishmen in the 1830s and 1840s.
Nature, Hiking Trail and Canoe Trip
Nearby, the Rönälven Canyon Natura 2000 area follows the watercourse from the Törntorp local history museum towards Lake Kläggen. The route along the watercourse is just over 600 metres long. The Abborrtjärnsberg Nature Reserve is also located north of Östmark/Röjdåfors. A marked hiking trail leads from the car park to the reserve. When travelling there, note that the access road may be closed by a gate during the thaw season.
The small Röjdån river is navigable by canoe from Lake Kläggen in Östmark to the centre of Torsby. The canoeing stage begins at the bathing area at the northern end of Lake Kläggen. Both the launch point and the destination of the navigable section are therefore specified. Water levels and navigability may vary seasonally; conditions at the starting point also differ depending on the time of year. Check these details before planning your trip.
Bathing Area and Seasonal Planning
Vallviken bathing area on Lake Kläggen in Östmark has a jetty, changing facilities, a barbecue area, a toilet and parking. Törntorp’s food offerings include motti with pork, waffles, coffee and homemade bread. These offerings may be seasonal. If you plan to visit the bathing area or have a meal, check the relevant conditions before your visit.
For trip planning, the attractions can be grouped by theme: Juhola represents a culturally shaped landscape, Röjdåfors the history of a water-powered mill, and the Röjdån a canoe trip with a specified start and destination. There is also a marked hiking trail to Abborrtjärnsberg and facilities at Vallviken bathing area.
