Discover Gränichen: Liebegg Castle and nature trails
Accommodation in Gränichen
Gränichen offers reasons for a variety of outings: the history of the castle and sandstone caves are as much a part of the local landscape as signposted nature trails and the Wyna. You can tailor your stay to what you want to explore—from historic buildings to trails focusing on trees, shrubs or wildlife.
Liebegg Castle and the history of the village
Liebegg Castle stands on a wooded hilltop in Gränichen. The late Gothic Luternauhaus is located beside the castle and was built by Augustin von Luthernau in the mid-16th century. Cultural events are held throughout the year in the castle’s idyllic surroundings.
Sandstone caves lie in a hollow in the forest near Liebegg Castle, with a small stream flowing through them. Sand was quarried there in the 19th century and used to build houses, churches and Liebegg Castle. Today, the caves are a popular destination for family outings and picnics. The landscape and its history of use meet here: the hollow in the forest shapes the location, while the sand quarrying explains its architectural significance.
The Kornhaus is also part of Gränichen’s local history. It was built on 16 July 1695 in place of an old farmhouse with a cheese dairy; grain was already being stored there by the summer of 1696. During renovations to Gränichen Church, parts of the original wall paintings were uncovered. These two historical connections complement the story of the castle with insights into past uses and architectural design.
Compare nature trails and routes
The Schulthess Nature Trail is a circular route from Schürberg to Refental, with the option of continuing to Liebegg. The full loop from Liebegg to Liebegg is about five kilometres long and suitable for pushchairs. Possible starting points include Bleien/Liebegg railway station and the Liebegg car park; you can also start the route by bike, for example from the car park below Schulthess. The Castle Walk is another option: it begins at Gränichen railway station and heads towards Liebegg Castle.
If you are interested in a particular nature theme, the Fuden Forest Nature Trail offers a different focus. This learning and discovery tour takes you outdoors to see native trees and shrubs. The circular route is about two kilometres long, with 60 species identified by signs. The differences between the routes can help you choose: the Schulthess Nature Trail passes through named landscape areas and can be extended to Liebegg, while the Fuden trail focuses on tree and shrub species.
The bike learning trail is designed as a Vita Parcours for mountain bikes. Natural and artificial obstacles are located mostly in the forest. The facility is open to the public and can be used free of charge and at your own risk. This sets it apart from the nature trails, which focus on learning and discovery: here, mountain biking and obstacles shape the experience.
The nature-friendly cemetery grounds also focus on wildlife. Five locations provide information about animal diversity and the constructed small-scale habitats that support it. A respectful visit offers the chance to experience how people and nature live together.
The Wyna, the valley and planning your visit
The landscape of Gränichen is shaped by the Wyna and the hills on both sides of the valley. Along its final stretch, the Wyna flows about five kilometres through Gränichen, first northwards and then northwest; the valley floor has only a slight gradient. The hills are steep, deeply divided by side valleys and marked by small high plateaus. The river section in the Pfendelmatte area, which has been preserved in a natural state, is part of the decentralised Aargau Floodplain Protection Park.
For a visit to the Chornhuus Museum, the exhibition “Back then in the village” displays numerous objects related to agriculture, household life and crafts in the attic. The museum is open on the last Sunday of each month from 2:00 to 5:00 pm, except in July and December. Check the date before setting off. The Witch Museum has an age limit: children must be at least 11 years old, even when accompanied by an adult; check this admission requirement in advance as well.
