Birmenstorf brings together the Reuss landscape, architectural and church history, and nature on the edge of the settlement. The village is in Switzerland, in the canton of Aargau and the district of Baden. Birmenstorf lies about four kilometres west-southwest of Baden. The landscape, local history and nature offer different points of interest when planning a trip.

Landscape and location

Birmenstorf is the second-lowest village along the Reuss, on its sunny right bank, elevated on a glacial gravel terrace. The riverbank and terrace together define the village’s landscape: the Reuss is as much a part of it as the village’s elevated position.

Churches and local history

Birmenstorf’s Reformed church was inaugurated on Bollerai in 1936. It is an example of New Building architecture. The site offers unobstructed views of the Reuss and Eigenamt; in foehn conditions, the Alps are also visible. The Alpine panorama is therefore dependent on specific weather conditions, while the views of the Reuss and Eigenamt are characteristic of the site regardless.

Another point of interest is the choir of the old church. After a significant cycle of frescoes was discovered, it was preserved and used as a cemetery chapel. The Reformation, introduced in 1528, also shaped village life: its effects lasted well into the 20th century.

Nature on the edge of the settlement

The nature trail passes through a varied natural area on the edge of the settlement. In the LindmĂĽhle nature reserve managed by Pro Natura Aargau, the diverse features include around 80 square metres of new dry-stone walls, stone mounds, spring outlets, ponds, hedges and nutrient-poor meadows. These were created as part of the ecological enhancement completed in 2023. Several lizard species have colonised the new small-scale habitats, including the sand lizard, which is endangered in Switzerland.

For nature enthusiasts, both the different habitats and their colonisation by lizards offer concrete points of interest. The nature trail and the nature reserve are two distinct ways to experience nature in Birmenstorf.

Canoeing on the Reuss

The 25-kilometre Reuss Kanu canoe route runs from Bremgarten to Gebenstorf and includes the stretch at the bridge near Birmenstorf. At the next island section after this bridge, the right-hand branch of the river is easier to navigate. The route description therefore combines an overall itinerary with specific guidance for the stretch near Birmenstorf. If you are planning a trip, bear in mind that conditions can vary seasonally and check them in advance.

Wine and regional produce

The Birmenstorf wine growers’ cooperative operates a wine cellar at Bruggerstrasse 3. It is open every Friday from 7:00 to 8:00 pm and at other times by arrangement. As opening information may change, it is advisable to confirm before travelling; visits outside Friday opening hours are possible by arrangement.

LindmĂĽhle also sells flour made from wheat, UrDinkel, rye and seeds in small bags for private use. If you are interested in a particular variety or pack size, check the current selection in advance, as the product range and availability may change.
