You can get to know Busslingen through specific hiking and history themes: the “From the Reuss across the Heitersberg” hike passes through the hamlet, which is also home to a historic grain mill. In Remetschwil, the cultural trail adds art, nature and local history to the picture. If you are looking for a hotel, these different highlights may influence your choice of where to stay.

Hiking between the cultural trail and the Heitersberg

The Remetschwil Cultural Trail combines art and nature along two different routes. Ten sculpture locations are spread across two circular trails, and you can access information at the stops using QR codes. Some spots offer views. Artist Beatrix Motsch offers private guided tours of the trail for clubs, groups and anyone interested in culture.

The landscape is also part of the cultural trail: the forest along the route is home to deer, foxes, badgers, squirrels and various bird species. At Fuchstobelbach, the trail continues to the end of a small beech forest. A small hiking trail runs along the other side of the stream. The route therefore highlights both the art installations and the woodland and stream landscape.

The Heitersberg is an old glacial medial moraine formed by the Reuss Glacier. It was created during the Riss glaciation, between 350,000 and 120,000 years ago. Many trails lead across the Heitersberg from a clearing on the cultural trail; you can explore it on foot or by bike. Its geological history and trails give the ridge two distinct aspects: it is both a landscape feature and a destination for outdoor activities.

Busslingen on a hiking route

The “From the Reuss across the Heitersberg” hike passes through the hamlet of Busslingen and, after a section through woodland and a ravine, reaches the village of Remetschwil. Busslingen is therefore explicitly part of the route described. Remetschwil is in the canton of Aargau, between Baden and the Mutschellen, above the Reuss Valley.

There are further hiking opportunities in the wider Remetschwil area, around the Heitersberg and along the Lägerngrat Ridge Trail. A hike to Egelsee passes through Remetschwil at the beginning of the route and ends at a moor lake in a nature reserve. Egelsee and the Reuss landscape around the Dominiloch footbridge are also nearby. The Egelsee hike and the route across the Heitersberg have different destinations: one focuses on a moor lake in a nature reserve, the other on the ridge.

Mill, wayside cross and traces of the past

The Busslingen Mill is a grain mill built in 1868. Parts of its historic fittings and milling equipment have been preserved; traces of the former overshot waterwheel can still be seen in the masonry. The Sennhof wayside cross, dating from 1860, is made of shell limestone and has trefoil-shaped beam ends. It is listed as regionally significant in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.

Archaeological finds in Remetschwil date from the Hallstatt period to Roman times. They include a grave discovered in the Grosshau area, dating from the 1st century AD. In 1948, a cremation grave containing weapons and pottery grave goods was found and investigated there; it appears to have been the grave of a Helvetian warrior. Fragments of a clay amphora used to store wine were also found near Grosshau.

The landscape also preserves traces of its formation: a glacial erratic was left in the area during the retreat of the Reuss Glacier in a Middle Pleistocene glacial period. The visible part measures six by one metre. In the past, farming in Remetschwil included viticulture as well as arable farming and livestock raising. This historic land use complements the archaeological finds by offering insight into how the area was farmed in earlier times.
