Künten lies in the Baden District in the Reuss Valley, between Baden and Bremgarten, and offers views of the valley. During your stay, you can experience the river landscape, woodland activities and local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Künten, consider whether you would like to focus your trip on spending time by the Reuss, getting active outdoors or exploring cultural history.

Riverside Landscape and Nature Watching

The Reuss riverbank in Künten is a varied and attractive local recreation area. One special natural area is the “Alte Reuss”. This nature reserve lies on the boundary between Eggenwil and Künten-Sulz and is protected as both a floodplain and an amphibian spawning area of national importance. The designations refer to different aspects of the area: its floodplain landscape and its importance as a spawning ground for amphibians. The “Alte Reuss” also offers the chance to observe rare animal species. If you are interested in nature and wildlife, this opportunity to observe them provides a distinct focus alongside activities in the forest.

Forest and Water as Leisure Options

You can walk, mountain bike and jog in the Talhau, Hau and Brandholz woodland areas. The Reuss adds a seasonal water-based activity to these options: in summer, it is a popular swimming destination. Check local water conditions before swimming. This offers a choice between different ways to be active in the forest and a swimming option available in summer.

Holy Cross Church and the Mill

The history of the church in Künten can be traced through two distinct dates. The Heiligkreuz Künten parish was established as an independent parish in 1901. The current Holy Cross Church was solemnly consecrated by Bishop Franziskus von Streng on 30 May 1965. The consecration date refers to the present church, not to the establishment of the independent parish. For travellers interested in cultural history, this distinction in timing highlights two separate stages of development.

At Mühlegasse 2 stands the mill, a nationally significant monument under comprehensive protection. Its basic structure probably dates back to the 17th century. The mill also contains a largely preserved drive mechanism from the 19th century. Two different periods are therefore represented here: the probably older basic structure and the later technical installation. This distinction makes the mill an interesting testament to architectural and technological history.

Archaeological Traces and Early Place Names

A burial mound on Lebern near Sulz is considered evidence of much earlier settlement. Remains of a Roman settlement have also been found in Künten and Sulz, including coins, pottery shards, and bronze and iron tools. These archaeological clues complement the later evidence from the church and mill, offering a distinct perspective on the area's past. The recorded place names also provide a chronological reference point: Sulzo and Chünten are first mentioned around 1160 in the “Acta Murensis”. The mention of the two names adds a written perspective on local history to the archaeological evidence.

Künten Forest Hut

Since 27 October 2025, members of the public have been able to rent the Künten Forest Hut. Booking conditions may change, so check them before making specific plans. The rental option is a separate aspect of trip planning from finding a hotel for your stay.
