Villmergen lies in the Bünztal in the southeast of the canton of Aargau. Several themes come together here when planning a trip: the history of the Villmergen Wars, distinctive buildings, a regional circular route, and opportunities for exercise and relaxation. Villmergen is on main road 25 between Lenzburg and Zug, about seven kilometres from the Lenzburg motorway exit. If you are looking for a hotel in Villmergen, you can consider whether you are particularly interested in local history and architecture, a hiking stage, or the outdoor pool and sensory park.

Villmergen and the Freiämterweg

The Freiämterweg is a circular route with three route options and is more than 180 kilometres long. One described connection runs from Hilfikon Castle via Villmergen to Othmarsingen. The two details offer different kinds of guidance: the length describes the circular route as a whole, while the connection via Villmergen identifies the course of one route. Check trail conditions and signage before setting out on a hike.

Villmergen is also associated with specific dates in history: decisive battles of the Villmergen Wars took place here in 1656 and 1712. These events give the town its own historical significance and offer a different way to discover the destination than its architecture or a hike.

Church, Factory and Castle

The Roman Catholic parish church on Kirchgasse was built by Wilhem Keller from 1863 to 1866; he also designed its furnishings. It is a three-aisled hall church. The nave has a ribbed cross vault, and the polygonal choir is as wide as the central nave. These features describe both the church’s layout and the design of its interior.

Another chapter in the history of architecture is the main building of the Bally factory. It was built in 1909–1910 and has Priority A status, meaning it is of national importance. Cantonal protection covers the façades and roof. Shoe production ceased in 1987; since then, the premises have been rented to various tenants. This distinguishes the former industrial use from the subsequent rental period.

Hilfikon Castle also has Priority A status and is of national importance; it is protected in its entirety by the canton. Surviving parts of the medieval castle include the keep incorporated into the present-day castle building, two round towers at the southeast and southwest corners, and remains of the curtain wall. The architectural history here therefore offers different points of interest from the parish church or factory building: the focus is on surviving elements of a medieval castle complex.

Outdoor Pool and Sensory Park

Villmergen outdoor pool has a 25-metre swimming pool; its seasonal opening times may vary. The facilities also include a self-service restaurant and a kiosk with a wide selection. What is available may change. The sensory park near the Obere Mühle is a small place to explore and a meeting space for all generations. It includes a foot bath in a Kneipp facility. Check operating details before your visit. The outdoor pool and sensory park offer different experiences: the swimming pool is part of the outdoor pool facilities, while the Kneipp foot bath is part of the sensory park.
